Perjury
Lying under oath in court
Subpoena
A court order which forces witnesses for the accused to appear and testify in court whether they want to or not.
Bail
Money provided by the accused to insure that the defendant will appear in court at his appointed hour.
Indictment
A formal accusation charging the accused with a crime and ordering him to go to trial.
Plaintiff
Person bringing the complaint
Defendant
Person being accused of the crime
Misdemeanor
A minor crime with jail time up to 364 days
Felony
A serious crime with punishments ranging from jail time to the death penalty
Assemble
Gather within a group to discuss issues
Petition
To circulate a written statement for the purpose of gaining signatures of those for or against an issue.
Slander
SPOKEN statement damaging someone’s character
Libel
A WRITTEN statement damaging someone’s character
Due Process of Law
A person is entitled to the entire court procedure
Double Jeopardy
No person can be tried for the same crime twice assuming he was found innocent the first time.
Valid Evidence
Direct evidence such as DNA or a witness which could directly link someone to a crime
Circumstantial Evidence
Indirect evidence that implies something occurred but doesn’t directly prove it
Probable Cause
A solid reason to believe that a crime has been committed
