What is the Bill of Rights?
the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution and the 13th and 14th Amendments
When was the Bill of Rights written?
1791
1st Amendment
freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, petition government for redress of grievances
2nd Amendment
right to bear arms in regulated militia, not intended for individual’s rights
3rd Amendment
troops will not be housed in private citizen’s homes
4th Amendment
protects against unreasonable search and seizure (warrant needed)
5th Amendment
protects accused people from double jeopardy, self-incrimination, due process, just compensation, and required indictments
6th Amendment
guarantees a speedy and public trial, confrontation by witnesses, and the right to call witnesses on one’s own behalf
7th Amendment
guarantees a jury trial
8th Amendment
protects against excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment
9th Amendment
protects any rights not mentioned in the previous amendments
10th Amendment
all powers not specifically delegated to the federal government are retained by the state
