Human Dignity
Right: You have dignity and self-respect no one can take away
Responsibility: Treat others with respect. Protect their dignity
Equality
Right: All people treated equally. Cannot be discriminated against.
Responsibility: Treat others fairly. Don’t discriminate
Life
Right: No one can kill you. Have right to live to full.
Responsibility: Respect, defend and protect others right to life
Freedom of Security of the person
Right: Cannot be be arrested and held without charge or trial. No torture. Full control over body. May not do without own permission.
Responsibility: Obey the law. Respect others. Never bully. Solve conflicts peacefully.
Slavery, servitude and forced labour
Right: Not allowed. No one can force you to work without pay.
Responsibility: Never enslave someone.
Privacy
Right: Cannot be searched without warrant. Cannot read personal data without permission
Responsibility: Do nothing that will get state involved in personal data.
Freedom of religion, belief an opinion
Right: Have own opinions and religions. Other must respect.
Responsibility: Respect others religions and beliefs
Freedom of expression
Anyone can say anything as long as it doesn’t violate other rights
Responsibility: Do not spread lies. Opinions should not harm.
Assembly demonstration, picket and petition
Right: Can demonstrate, picket or present petition. Must be peaceful.
Responsibility: Hold orderly peaceful demonstrations
Freedom of association
Right: You can mix with others regardless of circumstances.
Responsibility: Do not get involved in clubs based on criminal or discriminating behavior
Political rights
Right: Can join political party. Can vote in elections in secret.
Responsibility: Vote in every election
Citizenship
Right: Cannot be taken away.
Responsibility: Be responsible. Obey laws.
Freedom of movement and residence
Right: Live wherever you want. Leave and enter country at anytime.
Responsibility: Keep your passport updated
Freedom of trade, occupation and profession
Right: can do any work you want. Must have skills/qualifications
Responsibility: Get fully trained and follow rules
Labour relations
Right: have right to be treated fairly at work. Allowed to join union and strike.
Responsibility: Follow rules of strike action
Environment
Right: Have healthy environment. State must protect it.
Responsibility: Look after environment. Promote sustainable development. Do not litter or waste water/electricity.
Property
Right: Property taken under certain conditions. Land reform allowed. Everyone has land
Responsibility: care for property and pay rates and taxes. Respect others’ properties.
Housing
Right: everyone has access to housing.
Responsibility: Only evict with warning in advance
Health care, food, water and social security
Right: Have access to basic health care services
Responsibility: Save water. Plant food. Be responsible
Children
Right: Family care Food, shelter and health care Not abused Not detained Given lawyer Not used in war No forced work or labour
Responsibility: Act responsible. Avoid risky situations
Education
Right: Cannot be stopped, even if can’t pay.
Responsibility: Work hard at school. Follow rules and respect others
Language and culture
Right: Use language of choice and follow any culture
Responsibility: Respect others’ cultures
Cultural, religious and linguistic communities
Right: Communities can practice own culture, religion. Own schools
Responsibility: Respect others’ cultures
Access to information
Right: Everyone has right to government information
Responsibility: Use information responsibly
Administrative action
Right: government actions must be reasonable and fair
Responsibility: Follow the law. Know your rights
Access to courts
Right: Can ask court to make a decision.
Responsibility: Avoid petty arguments in court.
Arrested, detained and accused persons
Rights: every person has rights
Responsibility: Avoid breaking the law
