What are Civil Liberties?
Constitutionally established guarantees and freedoms that protect citizens against arbitrary government interference.
What is the Bill of Rights?
The Bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments in the Constitution.
What are Federalist?
A group that was in favor of a more powerful central government.
What are Anti Federalist?
In favor of more power to the States.
Why were the Bill of Rights put into the Constitution?
George Mason a (Delegate of Virginia) and other states wouldn’t ratify the Constitution without a Bill of Rights included. James Madison compromised and included the Bill of Rights after the states had ratified the Constitution. (1787)
What did James Madison believe?
A free government by the people had no right to trample on Civil Liberties anyway. What’s the point in spelling it all out. If we start listing out specific rights there’s a chance we could miss something. Thus better not to specifically mention anything at all.
Where did James Madison get inspiration for the Bill of Rights?
James Madison drew heavily from George Mason’s own work in the Virginia Declaration of Rights included in Virginia’s Constitution.
What does the First Amendment help protect?
Protects Freedom of Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly, and Petition.
What does the 2nd Amendment help protect?
Protects the right to keep and bear arms.
What does the 3rd Amendment help protect?
Protects citizens from having soldiers quartered in their houses.
What does the 4th Amendment help protect?
Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures of personal property and effects.
What does the 5th Amendment help protect?
The 5th Amendment deals with the rights of citizens when they are accused of crimes.
What does the 6th Amendment help protect?
The 6th Amendment explains the process of when a person is accused of a crime. And explains the protections they’re entitled to.
What does the 7th Amendment help protect?
The 7th Amendment guarantees the right to trial by a jury of your peers.
What does the 8th Amendment help protect?
Protects cruel and unusual punishment and excessive bail.
