What right does the 1st amendment permit and protect?
Freedom of speech:
The rights of free speech, freedom of the press, free peaceful assembly, and freedom of religion.
What right does the 2nd amendment permit and protect?
The right to Bear arms:
The people’s right to a well regulated militia (necessary to the security of the state) and the right to bear arms.
What right does the 3rd amendment permit and protect?
Quartering of soldiers:
No solider shall be quartered in a person’s house without consent during a time of peace or war, unless prescribed by law.
What right does the 4th amendment permit and protect?
Protection of search and seizure:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures. Warrants must be issued with probable cause support by oath or affirmation.
What right does the 5th amendment permit and protect?
Right of fair trial (and remain silent):
No person shall be held to answer for a crime unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury (unless involving the military or militia while in service during a time of war or public danger). Nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process. Nor shall property be taken for public use without compensation.
What right does the 6th amendment permit and protect?
The right of due process:
In all criminal prosecutions the accused has a right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury of the state and district where the crime was committed (being previously ascertained by law). And has the right to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation and to confront the witnesses brought against them, have a compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in their favor, and have assistance of counsel for their defense.
What right does the 7th amendment permit and protect?
Right of trial by jury:
In (federal) civil suits (pertaining to a value exceeding $20), the right of trial by jury shall be preserved. A no fact provided by jury, shall be re-examined by any court of the United States, according to the rules of common law.
What right does the 8th amendment permit and protect?
Right of protection against cruel and unusual punishment:
No excessive bail, fines, nor cruel or unusual punishments shall be inflicted.
What right does the 9th amendment permit and protect?
The right to other fundamental rights:
The list of rights shall not be misconstrued to deny other rights of the people, not listed in the constitution.
What right does the 10th amendment permit and protect?
Rights reserved to states or persons:
The powers not delegated or prohibited to the United States by the constitution, are reserved to the states or people respectively (Separation of state and federal governments rights).
