What about the relative sizes of blood vessels?

A

Blood vessels near your heart are big like highways. As the blood goes away from your heart it ends up on smaller and smaller blood vessels like streets. Every cell in your body sits next to a very small blood vessel called a capillary which are like a driveway. The cells are like houses. The blood brings nutrient and oxygen to every cell. Every cell puts waste products like carbon dioxide back into the blood stream.

Explain blood flow through the 2 sides of the heart.

A

When the right side of your heart squeezes it sends blood down to your lungs where it gets oxygen and turns red. Then it goes to the left side. When the left side squeezes it sends blood to all the other parts of your body. When it comes back it’s on the right side again.

Capillaries

A

Are very small passage ways that allow liquids to move through them. They are the vessels that connect arteries to veins. They are so small that blood cells have to travel single file through them.

What happens when you measure blood pressure?

A

You squeeze the veins and arteries in your arm and see how much they push back. The loudest sound is the Lub - the big squeeze. The quieter sound, the Dub, is when the heart is reloading. The top number of the blood pressure reading is the Lub. The bottom number is the Dub.

How fast does your heart beat when you are resting? When exercising?

A

70 bpm resting. When exercising it beats faster, perhaps as much as double - 140 bpm - to keep up with your muscles oxygen demands.

How much does your heart weigh? How much does it pump in a day?

A

About 300g. About as much as an apple.

It pumps 7,000 liters per day.

What happens if you stand up fast or go in a plane and do g-force maneuvers?

A

The blood in your brain goes down into your body but does not get replaced right away. A g-suit is tight and has air bladders in the legs to help the blood go back up and pump to your brain so you can stay alert.
