What is the difference between MRCP and ERCP?
MRCP- MRI of biliary tree
ERCP -endoscopy to remove gallstones
What is primary biliary cirrhosis?
bile duct is damaged by chronic autoimmune inflammation
What are the symptoms of primary billiary cirrhosis?
itching, dry eyes, fatigue, jaundice
How would you treat primary billiary cirrhosis?
symptomatic
treat itch - e.g. cholestryamine
monitoring
transplant
What are the symptoms of chronic cholecystitis?
flatulence, dyspepsia, abdominal discomfort, nausea
What is the treatment of chronic cholecystits?
cholecystectomy

What is ascending cholangitis?
inflammation of common bile duct/biliary tract following bacterial infection
What are the symptoms of ascending cholangitis?
charcot’s triad = fever + RUQ pain + jaundice
reynold’s triad = charcot’s traid + shock + altered mental state
What is acute cholecystitis?
blockage of neck of gallbladder
What are the symptoms of acute cholecystitis?
increased WCC, ESR, CRP
RUQ pain, vomiting, fever
What is the treatment for acute cholecystitis?
NBM, bed rest
antibiotics
laproscopic cholecystectomy
What are the risk factors of gallstones?
obesity, hypercholesterol, female, older >60, having had kids
What are the symptoms of gallstones?
biliary pain, jaundice
some are asymptomatic
What is the treatment for gallstones?
watch and wait
laproscopic cholectystemomy
