Understand the call of abraham. What did god ask Abraham to do (Genesis 12)
God told Abraham to leave his country, his people and his father’s household and go to the land I will show you.
What was the sevenfold promise God gave Abraham? (Genesis 12)
(1) I will make you a great nation
(2) I will bless you
(3) I will make you name great
(4) You will be a blessing
(5) I will bless those who bless you
(6) I will curse those who curse you
(7) In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
How did God confirm the covenant with Abraham? Describe Abraham’s dream and the covenant ceremony.
God confirmed the covenant with Abraham by conducting a covenant ceremony. This represented that he would keep his promise. God appeared to Abraham in a deep sleep. There, he made a covenant with him. Abraham saw a visual of a smoking firepot with a blazing torch passing between the pieces. This was God making an oath to Abraham that he will fulfill his promises. In the days of Abraham, people would make a covenant with each other, as a form of unbreakable promise. In this ceremony, the promise had to pass between cut pieces of a sacrifice, with a piece in their hand. The blood that dripped as they went along, symbolized the consequences if the promise were to be broken. If the promiser breaks the promise, the other individual holds all rights to kill the promiser, like the sacrifice. In the dream, God was the one passing through with the sacrifice. This meant that if He broke his promise, Abraham had every right to kill him, but God couldn’t be destroyed. This meant that God would 100% fulfill his promise.
Define the sovereignty of God and explain three examples (that we talked about in class) about how God displays his sovereignty.

Describe the story of Abraham sacrificing his son Isaac. What was the end result? How is this a picture of what Jesus would do in the future? (See genesis 22)
God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac on a mount moriah. He was probably devastated to hear this, but he had faith in God, so he accepted the order. He made Isaac carry the wood that would be used for his sacrifice. When they arrived after traveling for three days, Abraham instructed the servants to remain at the bottom of the mountain, and wait for them to return. When the father and son were doing preparations, Isaac asked his father where the sacrifice was. Abraham replied with The Lord will provide. When Abraham was about to strike his son, an angel appeared before him and commanded Abraham to stop. He informed Abraham that this was a test to see the amount of faith and trust in the lord. Then, the lord provided a ram, which was sacrificed in the end.
This is a picture of what Jesus would do in the future. He planned to save us from dying, by giving himself up. Jesus represented the ram, and Isaac represented human kind. In the story, Isaac (Humans) would be in danger, and the ram (Jesus) would save us.
Describe the relationship between Jacob and Esau. Did they get along? Why or why not?
Jacob and Esau were the sons born to Isaac, the son of Abraham. Isaac favored Esau, while Rebeka (wife of Isaac, and mother of Jacob and Esau) favored Jacob. They did not have a good relationship because he had sold Esau’s birthright in exange for stew. He had pretended to be Esau, and presented him in front of his father, who was mostly blind, and gained the birthright. Now, Esau did not care for his birthright because he traded it with Jacob for a bowl of soup. When Esau returned, he was furious at Jacob, and plotted to kill him when his father died. So, Jacob fled from his hometown. He had stolen his father’s blessing.
Describe Joseph’s dreams that he shared with his family. What kind of reaction did his family Give?
Joseph’s dream was that 11 sacks of barley were bowed down to 1 sack of barley. The 11 sacks of barley were Jacob’s brothers, and the 1 sack of barley was joseph. This meant that when the time came, his brothers would bow down to him. His family thought that was crazy because he was the 11th child out of the 12 children of Jacob. How could it be that they would all bow down to him, he was the youngest. They doubted him and were in disbelief. another dream was when the stars, moon, and sun bowed down to him.
