“gospel” vs “Gospel
gospel, is a word that means good news
Gospel refers to a specific book of the bible or the four Gospels together.
Know something about the nature of the genre we call gospel, what kind of literature is this?
Ancient Biography (supposed to get you to follow/ be like the person its about)
What do we know (and not know) about the original authors of
the Four Gospels? Anonymity. What does early tradition tell us?
Anonymous Papias identifies author as “Peter’s interpreter” (1 Pet. 5:13; box 6.1)

Cites Hebrew scriptures as the authoritative word of God
Less knowledgeable about Palestine
Assumes knowledge of Latin terms but explains Aramaic
What kind of materials do the Gospels contain?
parables

pronouncement stories (stories with a point of one thing Jesus said

What does Luke tell us (1:1-4) about his writing and research?
eyewitnesses and ministers had delivered oral teachings- The author wanted an orderly account to be written
What do we mean by “oral tradition”? How long was this period?
the gap of time between Jesus life and the writing down of those events
about 30 years?
What is “Q”?
a hypothetical collection of sayings by Jesus (the authors of Matthew and Luke seem to share
what is the synoptic problem?
What is the dominant majority “solution” to the Problem? Know
the basic principles underneath the majority solution.

Know the basic facts related to Mark’s Date, Place, Author,
Community, Style, and Key Themes (really focus on the first few
PowerPoint slides from this week!)

“Messiah” means, what it represented to 1st century Jews

Jesus may have done this because no one expected a suffering messiah
Understand Mark’s “negative” view of the disciples. Be able to
talk about how this works itself out as a theme, why it’s
important, how Mark develops it, etc
Blind, failing outsiders
discipleship is about staying in
relationship, not achieving success
NTPod 28—In Mark, the disciples are consistently outsiders—
making mistakes, not understanding, etc. To them, the
kingdom and Jesus’ Messiahship is a mystery.
Know Mark’s key text and why it’s so important (8:27-30)
Peters confession- Peter says “you are the Christ”
this marks a turning point for the disciples
Peter rebukes Jesus and Jesus rebukes peter.
Know the basic outline of Mark: Chapters 1-8 / Chapters 8-16
first half= Who is Jesus
second half= what does it mean to be a disciple
Know who John the Baptist was; how Mark portrays him/his role
John the baptist baptised jesus
then mark says he dies
Know what “kingdom” means:.
Reign or rule of God
Know that
this is the focus of Jesus’ preaching and teaching
Understand the role of demons in Mark.
Mark is a cosmic Gospel.
He assumes the place of dark powers and evil, unclean spirits.
The demons know who Jesus is, even when his own disciples
don’t. One of Mark’s key roles for Jesus is exorcist, one who has
power to cast out demons and unclean spirits
Mark 4—the main parable chapter in Mark. One main controlling
parable: The Sower. Mark is not fond of parables, so when he
gives us one, it’s usually important. The Sower is about insiders

and outsiders, those who hear and “get” Jesus, and those who
do not. Know what the sower, seed, and soils represent

seed= his word
soil= our hearts
