Know III the Baptism of Jesus
A. THE LESSON OF WAITING
- Jesus became aware of his mission as Messiah at age 12. Yet he was willing to go home to Nazareth with Mary and Joseph and WAIT PATIENTLY until His Father would call him to begin his ministry.
- But while he was WAITING, he was always SERVING.
B. THE TIME OF HIS BAPTISM
- Luke records that it was in the 15th YEAR OF TIBERIUS CEASAR The date: A.D. 27
- Luke also tells us that Jesus was ABOUT 30 YRS OLD
- Apparently, Jesus had received the DIRECTION from His Father He had been waiting for.
C. THE MEANING OF HIS BAPTISM
- The baptism is one of the MOST SOLEMN EVENTS in the life of Christ-Mark begins His gospel at this point and Jesus prays on the banks of the river. The emphasis is on the ANNOUNCEMENT that the 2ND ADAM’s MISSION is divinely approved
- JESUS’ WILLINGNESS TO FULFILL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS
a. Christ comes to John as the Second Adam, willing to bear the FLESH of all mankind.
- Christ came NOT to repent on His own account; nut IN BEHALF of the sinner
- As man had transgressed the law of God, Christ was ti fulfill EVERY REQUIREMENT of that law, and thus show PERFECT OBEDIENCE
b. Christ announces in His type his WILLINGNESS to die and be resurrected
- Christ’s baptism is also closely linked with the PASSION. Paul developed more fully this death-and-ressurection aspect in ROMANS 6. - THE HEAVENLY APPROVAL
a. the voice from heaven CONFIRMS GOD’S ACCEPTANCE of Christ in HUMAN NATURE and, therefore, of ALL MANKIND in Christ.
The words from heaven are a combination from PSALMS 2:7 and ISAIAH 42:1. Fittingly, one of these texts refer to the ROYAL MESSIAH; the other to the SUFFERING SERVANT. The title indicates the UNIQUE RELATION of Jesus to God and the UNIQUE MANNER in which he shall perform his work.
b. The opening of heaven is a revelation of God’s good will. it announces A NEW RELATION BETWEEN GOD AND MAN. When the heaven opens, it is a sign that God is now intervening.
c. The coming of the dove manifests the ACTIVITY OF THE TRINITY in the work of redemption.
