The Roman king who reigned during the time Jesus of Jesus’ birth. He built lavish houses across Israel and took extreme measures when he felt threatened by the possibility of the Messianic King overthrowing him.
herod
The earliest gospel, believed to have been written from Peter’s account and directed toward a Roman audience. Written at a very fast paced, this account goes quickly through the stories of Jesus’ life to show who He was and what He came to do.
mark
The third person of the Trinity who manifests God’s presence and power within creation. Jesus was equipped with the Spirit and gave the same Spirit onto His followers after His resurrection (Acts 2). The Spirit enables us to live out holiness, producing ‘fruit’ in our lives, and ‘gifts’ to serve God and people. This is God’s way of being present and active among us in the same way he was in Jesus.
holy spirit
A physician and historian who carefully researched his material and consulted eyewitnesses for information. His gospel is directed toward Gentiles and Greeks and his agenda is to show that Christ is the perfect, ideal Man, the true representative of the whole human race.

The term for the Hebrew Messiah, meaning ‘anointed’; originally it applied to the king, who was anointed, as David by Samuel and his successors. In the NT it applies to Jesus as the one who fulfilled the OT expectations.
christ
John begins his Gospel account by referring to Jesus as this. In the beginning, Jesus was in this form, He was with God and was God. Greek = “logos.”

The Great Commission
Jesus raises from the dead after 3 days and appears to many. He defeats death- the power that has tyrannized the old creation has been broken, defeated, overthrown. God’s kingdom is now launched. God’s new world is coming and the resurrection is proof and the ‘firstfruits’ of it.
Resurrection
The instance of the when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce that she has had found favor with God and would bear a child named Jesus. He would be Son of the Highest and the Lord would give Him the throne of His father David.
The Annunciation
The father of John the Baptist. God appeared to him to tell him that he would bear a son and he would call him John. In disbelief because of their old age, he was silenced until the child was born.
Zechariah
A Jewish scholar or teacher of the law.
Rabbi
The region where Jesus lived in his adult life and began his ministry.
Galilee
A day of religious observance and abstinence from work, observed by Jews from Friday evening to Saturday evening and many Christians on Sunday.
Sabbath
Traditionally, twenty-one of the NT documents have been given this title, though modern translations prefer ‘letters’. The apostle Paul is known the have authored most of them.
Epistles

The Apocalypse
From the Greek apostolos , meaning one who is sent and enjoys the authority of the agent who instructs him. Applied to the twelve leaders appointed by Jesus.
Apostle
The Christian doctrine of the triune God. The one God is made known as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ; each is God, but each is a distinct ‘Person.’
Trinity
The Jewish sect mainly comprised of aristocrats, high priests and merchants- the wealthier population. They believed in the Torah but not the afterlife or spiritual beings. They lived in conflict with the Pharisees and differed on issues relating to the extent of God’s revealed knowledge to the Jews. They tended to be in good standing with the Roman rulers of Palestine and are likely to have played a role in Christ’s death.
Sadducees
A major Jewish sect whose tradition was characterized by asceticism , strict adherence to the Jewish law, a special concern for the purity of the priesthood, and a belief in the imminent coming of the Messiah or Messiahs.
Essenes
A fanatical sect that arose in Judea during the first century A.D. and militantly opposing the Roman domination of Palestine.
