Adam
Genesis 2 and 3. Adam was the first man. Created in the image of God, he was placed in the Garden of Eden and commanded to rule over Creation on God’s behalf. Adam failed to obey God when he ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, the first sin. Through Adam, sin entered the world, and through Jesus, a type of Adam, mankind would be saved.
Abraham
Genesis 12-25. Abraham was called by God to leave his homeland to pursue a new one. God promised to bless him, make his name great, and that all the earth would be blessed through him. His offspring became the nation of Israel, out of which Jesus the Messiah was born.
Joseph
Genesis 37-50. Joseph was a son of Jacob and Rachel. Joseph had two dreams of one day ruling over his father and brothers. Jealous of this and Jacob’s clear favoritism of Joseph, his brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt. Eventually his ability to understand dreams landed him in Pharoah’s courts and then to second in command of Egypt. Through Joseph, God saved Egypt and all those nearby from destruction brought the famine. He reunited with and forgave his brothers, and arranged for them to live under Joseph’s provisions in Goshen.
Moses
Exodus 1 (Birth of Moses)-Deuteronomy 34 (Death and end of ministry). Moses was the great revered prophet of the Old Testament. He was born into a time where his people, the Hebrews, were slaves under Pharaoh’s command in Egypt. His mother hid him in order to escape Pharaoh’s command that all Hebrews male babies be killed. In response to Israel’s ‘groaning’ and cries for help (Ex. 2:24), God raised up Moses to lead Israel out of slavery into a land promised to them. In response to many crushing plagues, Pharaoh relents and lets Israel go. God would later give Moses the Law and establish him as their leader and prophet.
Deborah
Judges 4-5. Prophetess and judge of Israel who helped deliver her people from Jabin and Sisera.
Ruth
Book of Ruth. Moabite daughter-in-law of Naomi and later wife of Boaz. After losing her husband, she leaves her homeland to take care of her mother-in-law Naomi, a fellow widow. She was the great grandmother of David and was an ancestor of Christ.
Joshua
Numbers 13-14; Book of Joshua. The successor of Moses; the general who led the conquest of the Promised Land. Before this, Joshua and Caleb were sent by Moses to scout the Promised Land. Out of many more spies, only these two gave a good report.
Gideon
Judges 6-8. The great judge of Israel who delivered his people from Midian; he was given the name Jerubbaal. Gideon was the least of his clan, used by God to achieve victory in unusual ways.
Samuel
1 Samuel. Prophet and last judge of Israel. He anointed Saul and later David as king.
David
1 Samuel 16 – 2 Samuel. The great statesman, general, and king of Israel: He united the divided tribes of Israel and made many preparations for the temple, which his son Solomon would complete. He was an ancestor of Christ. Described as a “man after God’s own heart”.
Solomon
1 Kings 1-11. Son of David and Bathsheba and king of a united, strong Israel for forty years. His wisdom and sin stand out in his multi-faceted character. He was an ancestor of Christ.
Rehoboam
1 Kings 11,12,14. The son of Solomon; when he was king, ten tribes revolted from him and he set up the northern Kingdom of Israel. He was an ancestor of Christ.
Jeroboam son of Nebat
1 Kings 11-14. A servant of Solomon, and the first king of Israel after the division of the kingdom. He reigned for 22 years.
Elijah
1 Kings 17-2 Kings 2. A great prophet of God; he strenuously opposed idolatry and was caught up in a chariot of fire. Ahab, king of Israel, was his enemy. John the Baptist was said to come in the spirit of Elijah.
Elisha
1 Kings 19; 2 Kings 2-6. Disciple and successor of Elijah; he held the prophetic office for 55 years.
