Describe the work of Deborah
An outstanding leader in Israel when the nation faced a crisis of resurgent Canaanite power in the time of the judges. She commanded Barak to take the field as Israelite commander-in-chief against Sisera, and consented to accompany him at his insistence; the result was the crushing defeat of Sisera at the battle of Kishon. Her name means “honeybee”.
Describe the work of Gideon
Judge 6-9. First act: tear down his father’s altar to Baal and its sacred pole (asherah) and build an altar to Yahweh (Judg. 6); hence his name “Jerubbaal”
He delivered Israel from the Midianites, a bedouin people then dominating the central area of Palestine. He was the son of Joash, of the tribe of Manasseh. After defeating Midianites, and Israel had peace during the remainder of Gideon’s life. He many wives and sons among them the notorious Abimelech.
Describe Abimelech and his work as a judge
Son of Gideon and his Shechemite concubine. Murdered his brothers. Convinced Shechemites to make him a King. Ruled over Shechem for three years until a civil war. He was killed at Thebez by a woman who threw a millstone down on him from the wall.
