Q

The Romans were the ultimate legal authority in Palestine. Explain

A

The Romans did not understand the complexity of issues that were involved in attempting to rule the Jewish culture when they sat out to conquer Palestine. It became the least desirable place to be assigned.

Their motivation for conquering this area was to establish trade routes.

They ruled the trade routes and the shipping lanes.

They viewed Palestine as a difficult to deal with but necessary strategic location.

Q

Why did the Romans appoint rulers in Judea?

A

Because of the intense loyalty and patronism of the Jews, Rome knew that the Jews would respond better to a Jewish leader. So they appointed Jews to rule in Palestine, although these Jews were indeed Roman loyalists. As the Maccabean family lost its power to Rome another family began to rise in power. The family of Antipater to whom Herod the great was born.

What are the three marriage process steps for a Jewish culture

A

Engagement.
Arranged by the parents.
Official but not binding this takes place when they are children. Marriage is too serious to have emotional involvement

Betrothal.
 legally binding but not relational.
Legally but not physical. They can make an appeal to their parents, if they don’t want to marry them. But the parents still have the opportunity to choose. Only a document of divorce can break the binding. The bride price had to be paid. A written contract/deed had to be made. Has-beens promises, duties to his wife and money that would be designated to the wife in the event that there was a divorce upon his death. Ages for the girls was usually between the ages of 13 and 14 years old. When they entered puberty. For Jewish boys it was the ages of 18 to 19. For Greeks men the age of 30. The total usually lasted one year considered to be legally married and at this point if the man dies she would be a widow. During the year long betrothal, they would prepare gifts, home arrangements. By this time, if the valves was broken it was punishable by death. Stoning. Mary could have been stoned to death, but Joseph declined this because he was a righteous man.

Marriage
Legally binding and consummated relationally.
The proper wedding. Normal state. Marriage estate of humanity. Preparation for the wedding usually takes one year. Bride would be prepared by bathing, anointing, clothing, and special adornment by her female companions and relatives. Celebration of the wedding usually last seven days. She would be escorted from her fathers house to the grooms house in the evening torchlight. They would have a parade. Celebrating song, dance, and with musical instruments. In the evening torchlight. When the bride groom would come to the brides house to get her, then she would be escorted back to his house to come make the vows. Check out the Cambodian culture. In the wedding proper, introduction of the bride into the grooms house. Where there was a Hoopa set up. A canopy. Come in under the canopy, there would be seven blessings that would be pronounced on the couple. Then the marriage contract was red then there would be seven days of festivities.

The sign that Zacharias received was that he would not be able to speak until the prophecy had come to pass. He was a descendent of Erin. He was chosen by a lot and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. He was the celebrant priest of the week. Not the high priest. Every morning and every evening sacrifices were made for the entire nation. On the altar of incense, every morning and every evening the people prayer requests and repentance of their sins would be taken in and burn on the altar of innocence and if they were excepted, the priest would come out and give them a blessing. But if he didn’t come out, it wasn’t a good thing. Once a year on the day of atonement, the high priest would go into the most holy place and sprinkle blood on the mercy seat.

Very common when people leaving the first four it was a 70 mile journey. 3 to 4 days walk. Women, small children and elderly. Later, that evening the adult men would catch up with them. Jesus was at that point where he had stepped in to his manhood. Probably a days journey out and probably spent a day looking for Jesus within the relatives and traveling ban Jerusalem would be around 400,000 in population during this time and had ground another hundred thousand during the pot festival it was common for the people to ask questions in those days. The priest would sit out on the steps to dialogue with people about the knowledge they have of the Scriptures. Jesus takes the title father and refers it back to his fathers house. Priests

Pastors, teachers of the people. Hard to worship and to learn the word. They ended up in civil authorities. Governors, and having control. The priests wanted to control man from the outside and in Jesus wanted to control man from the inside out. In the times of Moses the priests duty were strictly religious, but in the times of crisis, Jesus bumped heads with them because the direction that they took in the rolls that they took went the wrong way. And pre-mosaic time is the function of the priest was always to be the head of the family the father. The word priest to draw near to draw near to God it was their responsibility to drink draw near to God for the people and to have the people draw near to God through them they were to be the bridge between God and man. It was God‘s intention for the whole nation to be priests unto the Lord, but because of their sins this did not happen. Their duties, the holy place, burn incense and the golden altar, clean trim and light the lamps, please show bread on the table, keep the fire burning constantly on the altar, and clear away the ash from the sacrifices. For morning and evening sacrifices bless the people with different portions of the sacrifices sprinkle blood below the silver trumpets and jubilee horn to inspect and clean persons to administer the oath of probation appraise things dedicated to the sanctuary. They ended up serving God with a divided allegiance that led them into dualism which led them into sensuality controversies tyranny drunkenness in adultery. They were rebuked after the exile for taking heathen wives of which they later repented. For a time to remain faithful to the law and Jehovah but soon the priest began using the priesthood for acts of covetousness. They became civil authority such as governors mayors money collectors etc. They became very powerful in their exercise of authority. Take care most about having control over the people they were not interested in pastoring or really teaching them just controlling them. One of the main reasons frustrations that the priest had with Jesus and perhaps with argued with the most was that he came to change the people from the inside out and they didn’t want to do that. They were more interested in being politically powerful than religiously and fluent sure the word priest occurs in the gospel 12 times the word high priest or chief priest occurs 84 times in the gospels the priests were considered as an enemies of Christ because of their other corruption

Q

Fasting or feasting?

A

Matthew throws a party invite all his friends his first instinct is to share the good news and his farewell to his friends. Come in a monks new believers. The Pharisees spent so much of their time separating themselves from saying that they couldn’t even know how to lead people. They rigidly kept laws and traditions they wouldn’t go on a journey or do business with centers they wouldn’t give a receive anything from them. They wouldn’t even have them as guests or be there guests they wouldn’t allow them to touch the hymn of the garment. Withdrew from people condemn them and ridicule them. The answer was to separate from sin and sinners but Jesus answer was to separate us to be separate from sin but not sinners.

Religious leaders question Jesus and his disciples piety for lack of fasting. That works at orthodox Jews had an idea and they’re teaching that a man was not really being religious unless he felt uncomfortable all the time. So they systemize their religious beliefs. They would pray at noon at 3 PM and 6 PM they were fast every Monday and Thursday from sunrise to sunset it just so happens that it would be the days that the people would come in to the market place they fasted to get gods tension.

The first illustration Jesus uses the first week of marriage they didn’t go away for the honeymoon they stayed at home and had an open house with friends and family and would spend a week with them coming and going Jesus was saying that the bride groom was in the house and we were feasting and partying and the people are coming and going. The second illustration Jesus uses was the one who sells an old piece of garment onto a new cloth. If you do that it will cause the clothing to tear.

The third illustration Jesus uses was the animal skin for the wine skins. Old wine ask cracks and dries up a new one expands and if you were to pour new one in the old wine skins it would ruin both the new one in the old wine.

At the pull up at Seda which is called the house of grace a man who was an invalid for 38 years is healed by Jesus. They believe the certain times and Angel would come and stir the waters of the pool. Whoever got the first spot into the pool they would be healed. Are you aware of the loss that you were trying to reach in fine for Jesus. When Jesus touches you do not go back to your old lifestyle. Jesus touched him to and said to him stop sending otherwise something worse would happen. Jesus told him to go back and present himself to the priest so that he could be entered back into normal society. But instead he disobey Jesus. We don’t know if it’s sin caused him to become worse off than he was

118
Q

The Jews had 39 categories for work on the Sabbath. Here are some

A

Reaping, parking in the green. Threshing, rubbing it in your hands. Winnowing, flying away to husks. Preparing food, eating it. Prepare food a day ahead of time. David was one of their heroes and he was a type of Christ in the lineage of the Messiah. Every morning they would bake 12 loaves of bread and they would sift the flour no less than 11 times to make sure it was pure. One loaf representing each try. They would put the Lowe’s on the show bread table the bread would stood there in the very presence of God. Common people were not allowed to eat this bread. David and his men came back from war one time and they were starving and they their needs to President of the law. Jesus was pointing this out and identified as with David.

119
Q

Three kinds of law

Q

Through the roof

A

What the Pharisees and teachers were doing they were sitting there they were not discerning. What did the man’s friends do. They tried to go the normal route but they could not. They went up to the roof and lowered him into the presence of Jesus through figs and dried mud. What did Jesus do he affirms the friends face his friends face is what he saw. He ministers to the sick man he perplexes the Pharisees what did the man do what did the man do? He stood up immediately praise God took his mat which represented his testimony. What the observer’s dead they were amazed and praise God.

121
Q

Breaking the law

A

The right hand in scripture represented as the hand of blessing. Compassion should take presidents over the law. It was always legal to treat diseases of the eye in the throat. Medical attention can be called in if someone swallows a piece of glass. Splinters removed from the eye or thorn from the body. All applications outside of the body were for bidden.

A person with a toothache was an allowed to gargle his mouth with vinegar. He could dip a toothbrush and vinegar and use that. Bandage can be put on a cut but no appointment to heal. Clothes can be put in the ear for a headache but no oil to heal. The Pharisees separated themselves from ordinary life to keep these rules and regulations. They made it impossible for the people to keep them. The rules were more important than gods compassion.
Only people who are separate and desperate enough to keep these rules were able to do so. They kept these rules alive and had more trouble than god really intended for them to have. They created their own mandate laws. Adding to the law.

122
Q

The man with the weather hand

A

Could not be considered dangerously ill. He wanted to work but we don’t know his exact occupation. Could’ve been a stonemason. All we know is that he wanted to provide for his family and he was well prepared to attempt the impossible. Jesus broke no laws. He never even touched a man. He simply spoke the word to stretch out his arm and Jesus spoke healing over him. Just like the Pharisees want to go the extra mile by adding heaps of travel to the people and not allowing them to fulfill the law. Jesus go above and beyond making sure that just buy the word he heals these people.

The Pharisees love their rules more than they loved helping others in need

Who he chose

A

He prayed all night. He discern the fathers well. Jesus let the father choose for him. Lesson a leader is responsible to discern who God is choosing and not to do the choosing for himself. Why he chose them. Ordinary people for the region of Galilee who was a blue color town average to lower income people. The only disciple with prestigious upbringing or lineage was due from Julia was Judas. A unique mix Matthew a tax collector Simon who was a Zealots, sworn to assassinate any tax collectors they came across. Do you need a unique team to accomplish God’s plan.
Why he chose them. That they might be with him to fellowship to mentor that he might send them out to preach to heal to stick to cast out demons a disciple as a learner and an apostle is a saint one first be a learner and then a teacher.

125
Q

Leper healed

A

The purpose for telling the man to show himself to the priest was so that he can enter into normal society and be in fellowship with with everyone else. The normal procedure for him was to do that. Jesus cares more about the soul than he does about performing miracles. Our bodies will be redeemed but our soul is eternal. Jesus makes the unclean clean. If we are worried that we will be contaminated we will never be able to reach the lost and hurting and contaminate them with the gospel.

Jesus with Drew went to a quiet place and prayed we need God to pour back into us especially after serving. Jesus did this as a pattern.

126
Q

Peters mother-in-law

A

In those days they divided fevers into two classes. Major and minor. Peters mother-in-law had a major fever. Jesus rebuked the demons and would not allow them to speak whenever he cast demons out. Those that were demon possessed. Jesus heals them with his touch. Many that were there were demon possessed. Jesus ministered even when he is tired. Miracles were just were not just for the crowds. He cared for the closest to him as well. For example, Peter’s mother-in-law. When he helps as we should immediately reach out to serve others and not seek personal attention. Period Peters mother-in-law serves as the first thing she does not try to share her testimony with everyone.

127
Q

First tour of Galilee

A

With the four fishermen he withdraws to a quiet place and praise. Balance times of ministry giving out in private times taking in. Balance times of being with people and being alone with God. Be willing to move out of your comfort zone and go wherever the Lord wants you to go.

128

Move to Cabernet

A

Nazareth is about 1200 feet above sea level. Room is approximately 686 feet below sea level. They were amazed because he taught with authority. Jesus speaks with authority and discernment over the demons. He told him to be quiet in the Greek it means muzzle Lenox another words shut up. Lesson when you are dealing with demonize people have wisdom don’t let people don’t leave people to themselves after they receive deliverance otherwise they could end up demon possessed and worse off than they were before.

There was a spot there were Jews believe that Abraham offered his son as a sacrifice. That’s what they believe. On the top of that mountain or somewhere near that is where David comes and build his temple. Mount Zion is referred to as Jerusalem place of worship where it says that David is to go up to Zion to worship. It’s considered to be the entire nation of Israel. Symbolizes the ultimate place that destiny where the redeemed are in eternity. They believe that Mount Moriah was the place of worship. Solomon build the temple under the direction by God. Do you believe it was Mount Zion and Maria. Let’s traditionalism and bigotry monks the Samaritans. The harvest. She leaves the well to evangelize tell her testimony is convincing and the lesson is you cannot follow Christ nor read the harvest while holding onto ethnic or religious prejudice
