Bgg Flashcards
Adaptation
A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce
Species
A group of similar organisms that can mate and produce fertile offspring
Scientific theory
A theory proposed by scientist
Evolution
Process by which species gradually change over time
Natural selection
Process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the species
Overproduction
Most species produce far more offspring than can survive. Offspring are produced like this, not enough resources food water and living space
Competition
Offsprings must compete with each other for food to survive
Variation
Differences between members of the same species
Selection
Some variation makes certain individuals adapted to their environment those are more likely to survive and reproduce
Classification
The process of grouping things based on their similarities
Taxonomy
Science of how living things are classified
Taxonomic key
Tools that determine the id of organisms
Geographic isolation
Example - One of the main ways that new species form. Occurs when members of the species become cut off from the rest. ( members of an isolated group can mate with old members) example - kaibad squirrel
What did Darwin observed on the Galapagos islands that he thought was a result of evolution?
The organisms that have left the mainland to go to the Galapagos islands were producing different offspring that they would have on the mainland
How did the finches and the evolution of their beaks demonstrate evolution
Evolution is the process by which species change gradually over time to better adapted to their environment. The finches demonstrated this when their beaks got smaller and thinner to help them crack nuts for a easier way to eat
