gov’t agency to protect slave rights, education, marriage, banks,hospitals.
What was Lincolns 10% plan?
10% of voters in the 1860 took an oath of loyalty, then they could start to set up state gov’t.No pardon for confederate officials or military leaders.
Who hated the 10% plan?
Radical Republicans
What was the Wade Davis Bill?
Rival plan for reconstruction, majority of white men swear loyalty to the union,denied the right to vote/hold office if fought in the civil war, Lincoln pocket veto
What happens after Lincoln died
Andrew Johnson becomes president, there were rival plans to rebuild the south.
What was Johnsons Plan?
gave forgiveness to all confederates ad property,must ratify the 13th amendment-freed slaves,recognized 4 southern state govt and soon to admit others.
What did they want to impeach johnson?
radical republicans controlled congress and did not get along w/ johnson.blocked efforts or radical reconstruction.
Why did they impeach johnson and when?
In 1868 house charged Johnson w/ high crimes and misdemeanors violated tenure of office act.They impeached him for firing someone
Did they have enough voted to kick johnson out of office?
no they were one vote shy
Who saved johnson from getting kicked out?
Edmund ross from Kansas who was knew to the govt and he was threatened to lose his job if he didnt vote to kick johnson out but he did any way and lost his job
What was radical reconstruction
south divided into 5 military districts controlled by the army,New state govt had to grant black males the right to vote,before readmission to the union,southern stated had to ratify 14th amendment civil rights issue prohibited former confederate officers and govt officials from voting.
What happened with state government
white concern limit the freedom of former slaves,republicans headed new govt.blacks ad the right to vote supported republicans,many elected into office.
What were the 13th 14th and 15th amendments
13th-abolished slavery in the US
14th native born or naturalized people were citizens forbade any laws to deprive any person life liberty or property
15th-declared state could not keep african american males from voting
