Beta blockers Flashcards
1
Q
How do beta blockers work?
A
- reduce heart rate
- reduce left ventricle contractility
- reduce speed of contraction
This all leads to a reduced oxygen demand of the heart leading to reduced blood pressure
2
Q
What are the different types of beta blockers and examples?
A
Non-selective (block beta 1 and 2 receptors) e.g. propanolol Cardio selective (for B1 receptors) e.g. atenolol, bisoprolol, metoprolol
3
Q
What are the side effects of beta blockers?
A
- sleep disturbance
- fatigue
- cold peripheries
