They only act nice and treat the children good when they have some sort of visitors.
How was the theme Racism shown?
He was underpaid (got $2 less than the other workers), He was put to sleep in the attic. He was mocked and teases by the white workers. he was overworked. No one interacted with him except to give him orders that was not related to his job.
How was the theme discrimination shown in the story?
The crippled children were not treated well by the nurses who were payed to take care of them. They didnt received good food and were mocked and called names. Dr.Renfield cared more about the publicity of the home than the actually children. They were started of affection.
How was the theme Appearance vs Reality shown in the short story?
In the story it was shown that the summer home was not what it appeared to be. Whenever there was a visitor you would see the nurses looking after the children, giving them good food but in reality when there is no visitor they give the children no attention. They would be getting good food while the children would be getting bad food. The Summer home appeared to be a loving and safe place for the children but in reality its the opposite.
