Why did Stalin create the Blockade?
He wanted to show to the Western powers that a divided Berlin would not work. He gambled on the Western powers withdrawing from Berlin so to win a huge propaganda success at the West’s expense.
What was the Berlin Airlift?
The Berlin Airlift (Operation Vittles) was when the Western powers flew supplies into Berlin to sustain the people there. American pilots were able to fly in at least 1,000 tonnes of supplies every day, and in January 1949, at least 170,000 tonnes were flown into Berlin.

What was the Berlin Blockade?
When Stalin blocked the Western powers’ access to their part of Berlin, meaning the only way to get there safely was through using the air corridors above Germany.
What happened after the Berlin Blockade?
After the end of the blockade (May 1949), the UK, GB and France united to form West Germany. Stalin responded by creating East Germany in October 1949
