Benzene Flashcards
1
Q
What is Kekule’s structure?
A
Carbons arranged in a planar ring, with alternating double, single bonds
2
Q
What is the accepted Benzene structure?
A
The delocalised model. Carbon atoms are Arranged in a planar ring, with a ring of delocalized electrons.
3
Q
How was Kekule’s structure proven incorrect?
A
He assumed the bond lengths of C-C, and C=C to be different.
X-ray diffraction showed that all the bond lengths are equal.
4
Q
Why is Benzene more stable than an alkene?
A
Electrons in the delocalised ring have more room than in C=C bonds.
Allows electrons to spread out the negative charge/
