Benign Conditions Flashcards
Age group affected by seborrhaic keratosis
> 30
Features of seborrhaic keratosis (7)
Waxy/greasy warty/papillomatous well circumscribed pale to dark brown appear stuck on benign usually multiple (keratin/cyst within)
Management of seborrhaic keratosis
reassurance
can be removed via curettage, cryosurgery or shave biopsy
Keratocanthoma features (4)
benign epithelial tumour
grows rapidly (SSC grows slower)
develops yellowish central crater filled with keratin
Keratin horn/hyperkeratotic core develops
Prognosis and management of keratocanthoma
may regress after 3 months
REFER TO DERMATOLOGY-HARD TO DIFFERENTIATE FROM SCC
Features of dermatofibromas (5)
benign arise from sites of trauma e.g. insect bites firm to touch tethered dimples when pressed
Junction nevi features (2)
cluster of melanocytes
flat hyperpigmented areas of skin
ONLY IN EPIDERMIS
Intradermal nevi features (3)
occur only in dermis
RAISED
melanocytes lose ability to produce pigment => skin coloured
Compound naevi features
in both dermis and epidermis
Congenital melanocytic nevus features
“birthmark”
benign
Complications of congenital melanocytic nevus
increased risk of melanoma if >5cm
Becker’s nevus features (3)
hamartoma
hard to treat
often becomes hairier over time
Features of halo nevi
hyperpigmented centre surrounded by hypopigmented circle
benign
Features of naevus spilus
speckled, lentiginous patch
Spitz naevus
benign juvenile melanoma
