Benign Breast Flashcards
Give examples of benign breast disease
Fibroadenoma
Fibroadenosis
Intraductal papilloma
Phyllodes tumour
Radial scar
Features of fibroadenoma
Benign neoplasm of a lobule
common in women under the age of 30 years
S/S: ‘breast mouse’ (discrete, non-tender, highly mobile)
Management for fibroadenoma
<3cm = conservative (over 2 years will shrink)
>3cm = surgical excision
Features of fibroadenosis
Fibrocystic change
Benign mammary dysplasia
No increased risk of breast cancer
Middle-aged women, very common
‘lumpy’ breasts which may be painful, bilateral
Symptoms may worsen prior to menstruation
Management for fibroadenosis
Conservative
What are intraductal papillomas
local areas of epithelial proliferation in large mammary ducts
hyperplastic lesions rather than malignant or premalignant
Common
Symptoms and signs of intraductal papilloma
40-60yo
Clear/blood-stained discharge
Management for intraductal papilloma
Microdochectomy (removal or lactiferous duct)
Features of phyllodes tumour
Arises from interlobular stroma
Some may arise within pre-existing fibroadenomas
Majority benign but some behave aggressively
> 50yo
Enlarging mass in women
Management for phyllodes tumour
Conservative
Consider surgery
Features of radial scars
Benign sclerosing lesion (central scarring surrounded by proliferation)
S/S: breast lump / pain
Ix: stellate mass on XR, mammogram
Management for radial scar
Biopsy ± excision
