Morphology of Actinic keratosis
Actinic =متعلق بالشمس
usually are less than 1 cm in diameter.
tan-brown or red, and rough (sandpaper-like) to the touch.
1/lower portions of the epidermis show cytologic atypia
2/hyperplasia of basal cells.
3/atrophy and diffuse thinning of the epidermis .
4/The dermis contains thickened, blue-gray elastic fibers (solar elastosis), the result of chronic sun damage.
5/The stratum corneum is thickened and shows abnormal retention of nuclei (parakeratosis).
Uncommonly, full-thickness epidermal atypia is seen;such lesions are considered squamous cell
carcinoma in situ
Clinical features of Actinic keratosis
very common in fair-skinned individuals.
1/👆in incidence with age and sun exposure. (face, arms, dorsum of the hands).
2/low risk for malignant progression.
3/often treated, either to prevent progression to malignancy or for cosmetic reasons.
Local eradication with cryotherapy (superficial freezing) or topical agents is effective and safe.
