What is Bells Palsy?
A
Idiopathic facial nerve palsy of Cranial Nerve VII
(Formerly believed to be due to reactivation of Herpes Simplex Virus)

Describe the onset, signs, and symptoms of Bells Palsy.
A
Onset:
- acute
- spontaneous
Signs and symptoms:
- ALWAYS unilateral!!!
- disappearance of nasolabial fold
- decreased tearing on affected side
- inability too wrinkle forehead
- loss of taste sensation
- inability to pucker lips

What is the treatment for Bells Palsy?
A
***Prednisone - ALWAYS!!!
Eye drop lubrication, if needed
Note: antiviral therapy no longer automatically prescribed!!!
