Bell 206 L3/L4 EP's Flashcards
EP: Engine Failure: Hovering
Indication:
- Left Yaw
- ENG OUT Light Illuminates
- Engine Instruments indicate powerloss
- ENG OUT Audio when N1 below 55%
- NR decr. with ROTOR LOW RPM light and audio on when NR below 90%
Recovery:
- Maintain Collective
- Control Yaw with Pedals
- Increase Collective to Cushion Landing
- Complete Helicopter Shutdown
EP: Engine Failure: In-Flight
Indication:
- Left Yaw
- ENG OUT Light
- ENG OUT Audio when N1 below 55%
- NR Decre. with ROTOR LOW RPM light and audio on when NR below 90%
Recovery:
- Enter Autorotation
- Attempt Restart if Altitude permits
- If engine doesnt restart
- Throttle closed
- FUEL VALVE switch OFF
- Maintain heading and attitude
- Collective adjust to maintain 90-107% NR
- Cyclic adjust for airspeed
- Flare to lose airspeed
- Apply collective as flare effect decreases to reduce speed and cushion landing
- Complete helicopter shutdown
Autorotation: Minimum rate of descent airspeed
52 KIAS (60 MPH)
Autorotation: Max glide distance airspeed
69 KIAS (80 MPH)
Autorotation: Nominal autorotative airspeed
61 KIAS (70 MPH)
Autorotation: Max airspeed
100 KIAS (115 MPH)
Autorotation: Whats minimum NR % needed by time you make level touchdown
70%
EP: Engine Restart In-Flight
Procedure:
-Adjust collective to maintain 90-107% NR
-Adjust airspeed as desired
*52 KIAS with minimum NR allow pilot more time
-Close throttle
-FUEL VALVE switch ON
-STARTER button Press and Hold
*If N1 is below 30% throttle shall be modulated to prevent exceeding TOT
-Throttle to Idle
-TOT modulate throttle to maintain 716-768 or 716-826(If red triangle)
-Throttle advance smoothly to full open position
*If restart unsuccessful abort and secure engine
-Throttle closed
-FUEL VALVE switch OFF

EP: Engine Underspeed
Indication:
- Decrease in N1
- Subsequent decrease in N2
- Possible decrease in NR
- Decrease in Torque
Recovery:
- Adjust collective to maintain 90-107%
- Confirm throttle full open
- If unable to maintain NR establish autorotative glide.
- Enter Autorotation
- Throttle closed
- FUEL VALVE switch OFF
- Maintain heading and attitude
- Collective adjust to maintain 90-107% NR
- Cyclic adjust for airspeed
- Flare to lose airspeed
- Apply collective as flare effect decreases to reduce speed and cushion landing
- Complete helicopter shutdown
- Prepare for poweroff landing
- If engine underspeeds but still operates dont shutdown. Helps tail rotor effectiveness.
EP: Engine Overspeed
Indication:
- Increase in NR
- Increase in N2
- Increase in N1
- Increase in torque
Recovery:
- Retard throttle
- N1 or N2/NR (attempt to stabilize with throttle and collective)
- Monitor TOT for normal operation
- NR maintain at 90-107% with throttle and collective
- If unable to maintain N1,N2,NR prepare for power off landing and shit off engine
- Enter autorotation
- Close throttle
- FUEL VALVE switch OFF
- Accomplish Autorotative Descent Procedure
EP: Engine Compressor Stall/Surge
Indication:
- Engine pops
- High or erratic TOT
- Decreasing or erratic N1,N2
- Torque oscillations
Recovery:
- use bollective and reduce power, maintain slow cruise flight
- TOT &N1 check for normal indications
- ENGINE ANTIICING switch ON
- PARTICLE SEP PRG switch ON
- HEATER switch ON
- Decide if its bad enough you need to shutdown engine
- Continued flight
- Increase collective slowly to achieved desired power
- TOT & N1 montior for normal response
- Land as soon as practical
- Decide to shutdown
- Enter autorotation
- Close throttle
- FUEL VALVE switch OFF
- Accomplish AUTOROTATIVE DESCENT PROCEDURE
EP: Engine Hot Start/Shutdown
Indication:
- Excessive TOT
- Visible smoke or fire
Recovery:
- Close throttle
- FUEL VALVE switch OFF
- STARTER button press to motor engine until TOT stabilizes at normal temp
- Complete helicopter shutdown
EP: Engine Oil Pressure Low, High, Or Fluctuating
Indication:
- Engine oil pressure below minimum
- Engine oil pressure above max or flucuating abnormally
Recovery:
- if eng oil pressure is below minimum montitor eng oil pressure and temp. Land as soon as possible
- if eng oil pressure is above max or fluctuating monitor oil pressure and temp. Land as sson as practical
EP: Engine Oil Temp High
Indication:
- Engine oil temp increasing above normal
- Engine oil temp above max
Recovery:
-Land as soon as practical
EP: Driveshaft Failure
Indication:
- Left yaw
- Rapid decrease in NR
- Rapid increase in N2
- ROTOR LOW RPM audio horn and light
- Possible increase in noise level
Recovery:
- Accomplish AUTOROTATIVE DESCENT PROCEDURE
- To maintain tail rotor effectiveness do not shutdown engine
- Complete helicopter shutdown
EP: Engine Fire On Ground
Indication:
- Smoke
- Fumes
- Fire
Recovery:
- Close throttle
- FUEL VALVE switch to OFF
- BAT switch OFF
- Engage rotorbrake
- Exit Helicopter
EP: Engine Fire During Flight
Indication:
- Smoke
- Fumes
