Beliefs And Teachings - Jesus Christ Flashcards
Jesus as the Son of God
- Jesus was God incarnated, meaning God in human form.
- not conceived naturally, placed in Mary by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus as the Messiah
Jesus is is often referred to as the Messiah, meaning “anointed one,” signifying he was chosen by God like ancient kings. While some Jews expected him to lead a battle against the Romans, Christians believe Jesus came as a spiritual saviour for all people. His anointing in Mark 14:3–9 highlights this role. Rather than ruling by force, Jesus’ kingdom is spiritual—restoring people’s relationship with God and guiding their lives.
Jesus as the Lord and Saviour
Christians believe Jesus is their Saviour, sent by God to restore the broken relationship between God and humanity caused by original sin. According to the Bible, sin leads to death, but Jesus, being both fully human and fully God, died to pay for human sin and rose again, conquering death. His death and resurrection bring forgiveness and reconciliation with God, offering the hope of eternal life in heaven. Christians also see Jesus as Lord, a title signifying divine authority, and believe declaring him as Lord is essential for salvation and shows a commitment to live under his rule.
The beatitudes
The word “beatitudes” means blessings, and in this passage, Jesus describes qualities God wants His followers to develop, such as meekness, mercy, and peacefulness. The first three Beatitudes encourage followers to recognize their needs, which helps them become more open to God and better able to share His love with others. The next Beatitudes focus on seeking God, truth, and righteousness, with purity of heart meaning to stay focused on God rather than selfishness. The final Beatitudes highlight suffering as a result of doing what is right in God’s eyes. Christians who suffer for their faith are blessed, as their integrity will be rewarded in heaven.
