What is the Trinity?
doctrine stating that God exists as one being in three co-equal, co-eternal, and distinct persons:
1. the Father
1. the Son
1. the Holy Spirit

- it is the teaching of the Bible
- Jesus taugh there is only on God
- God’s unity is the teaching of the Magisterium, the Creed’s and the Catechism

What does believing in God the Father mean?
Catholics believe:
* a Christians relationship with God should be like a Child’s relationship with its father
* God has a continuing relationship of love and care with his creation
* God will provide and protect

What does believing in God the Son mean?
Catholic’s believe:
* Jesus is God who became a human being
* Christians can worship Jesus because he is God
* Jesus was conceived by the action of the Holy Spirit (the virgin birth)

Catholic’s believe that the Holy Spirit:
* is the means by wich God communicates with humans
* inspired the Bible
* is the means by which God helps the Church preserve and explain Christ’s teaching
* is the means by which all the sacraments of the Church put believers into communion with Christ

How is the Trinity is reflected in worship and belief?
- every Mass beginning with a welcome in the name of the Trinity
- worshippers stating their belief in the Trinity in the Nicene Creed in the Mass - reaffirm their belief in the Trinity during Mass
- the trinity is the main belief of the Nicene Creed
- belief in God the Holy Spirit helps Christians understand the presence of God in the world

How is belief in the Trinity reflected in the life of a Catholic today?
- praying to the Father, through the son, in the power of the Holy Spirit gives Catholics the spiritual sense of God as ‘beyond us, with us and in us’
- the Trinity gives Catholics the sense that God is active and present in the world
- the Trinity teaches Catholics must work together to bring God’s love into the world, just as the person of the Holy Trinity work together to bring God’s love into the world

- God created the whole universe, ex nihilo, in six days
- starting with the heavens and the earth and ending with the creation of humans
- each part of the creation came about because of God’s words
- God made humans to have authority over the world and its contents
from nothing

- God created the heavens and the Earth, then formed Adam, then created Eve from Adam’s rib, then vegetation, birds and animal
- Eve fell into temptation - ate the fruit, gave some to Adam…
- first sin and were banished from the Garden of Eden

What is the Catholic understanding of Genesis?
- Catholic Church believes the Bible was written by writers were inspired by God
- it shows the eternal, not literal, truths about God’s purpose and human sinfulness
- accept the scientific view but believe Genesis reveals the truth that creation came from God

- Fundamentalist Protestants believe the Bible is the word of God and is true, so Genesis is factually correct
- Liberal Protestants believe that the Bible is the word about God’s rather than the words of Gods

Creator - created heaven and earth
omnipotent - created the universe out of nothing (ex nihilo)
omnibenevolent - created the world for humans, amde it a good place for them to live
eternal - no beginning or end
omniscient - knows all things before they happen

in Genesis, God speaks the word to create and the spirit hovers over the creation
the prophet Isiah claims that God sends his word and spirit to create and guide

How is the trinity shown in Jesus’ baptism?
- God the Son goes into the Jordan to be baptised
- as he’s being baptised, God the Holy Spirit descends like a dove and rests on him
- God the Father speaks from heaven

Why is the belief in God as 3 persons important for Catholics?
helps Catholics understand the different ways that God has shown his presence in the world:
* Father - power, creativity, care for the world
* Son - the love of God, sacrifice of God leading to slavation from sin and promise of eternal life
* Holy Spirit - presence of God in the world and strength that it brings to Catholics

What did the heresies of Adoptionism and Arianism teach, and what councils responded to them?
Adoptionism:
* the belief that Jesus was an ordinary man - born of Joseph and Mary, who became the Christ and Son of God at his baptisn
Arianism:
* the belief that the Son was created by the Father at the beginning of the universe - the Son is therefore a god but not God
Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople - explained the doctrine of the Trinity and formulated the Nicene Creed as a statement of Christian belief

What does the teaching of being created in God’s image remind Catholics?
- each human being is special, unique and sacred in God’s sight
- humans are more than animals and are not to be used as objects
- have fundemental human rights - e.g freedom of conscience and expression

What is humanities relationship with creation?
- we have a responsibilty care for God’s creation (the planet)
- Catholic Church teaches that Christians should regard the whole of creation as a gift from God + to be used in the way God intended
- God gave humans control of all the Earth, but only as stewards - complete the work of creation
What does stewardship means Christians have a responsibility for?
- look after God’s creation - it’s a gift
- make sure creation is not explpoited by humans - resulting in thinks like pollution - use resources wisely
- make sure the Earth’s resources are shared out fairly - don’t waste what others need
