What is a belief system?
A set of stories and realities
Includes beliefs, morals, and defines right and wrong
What is ideology?
Refer to the political, social, and economic ideas that help to define a particular group of people
Religion as a closed belief system
- suggest they know they know the truth about everything and do not take lightly to criticism
- can be very conservative in their beliefs and do not like change
Religion as a closed belief system
Herberg- some religions are open to change e.g. Church of England allowing females to be Bishops
Science as a closed belief system
Kuhn- because it runs of paradigms which shape the way discipline is defined therefore is hard to change
Science as an open belief system
Popper- because sci is open to challenges+ is built upon the idea of falsification
Once a theory is proven wrong it is changed
Marxism- Gramsci, Marx, Althusser
Science- great discoveries just give more money to the ruling class and fuels capitalism
Postmodernity-
there are multiple ideologies within society, these reflect the different views of groups within society
Feminism- Oakley
E.g. blocking women from religious powers
Justifies inequality within the work place
