Behavorial Questions Flashcards
Give me an example of the project or initiative that you started on your own. It can be a non-business one. What prompted you to get started?
During one of my design projects in college, we were working on an air quality system. None of us knew how to use Fusion360 or any software to 3D to make a box for our project. I know we would need it at the end, so I took the opportunity during spread break, and I decided to spend it learning how to use it and created a box to add all the components in it.
When I worked at Castle Park, I created an app that would assign tasks to each coworker and update each task so everyone knows what needs to be done and help finish everything faster. The park was big, so it would take time coming back to the back room and checking what else needed to be done and then going back out. It helped save time and everyone getting out at their scheduled time. Instead of some people clocking out early because they weren’t allowed overtime so leaving more tasks for others who had to stay.
I worked on a mental health app. I know there are many different types of mental health apps available, but they always seem to be missing something. I know people struggle in many different ways and different things help someone, so I wanted to create something where no matter who uses it, can possibly find something here and not try to download so many apps for different things.
Tell me about a time that you had to work on several projects at once. How did you handle this?
I feel like this was my life through my engineering journey. I always had different projects going on in different classes. Some were bigger than others. I think I handled this very well because I would make a schedule to get my work done
Describe a situation in which you felt you had not communicated well enough. What did you do do? How did you handle it?
It was when I was the leader in my group for my engineering economics class. We got assigned assignments and I talked to the group about them. so we could get them done. A part of the team didn’t really understand what they needed to do, so I decided to make a spreadsheet and assign the work equally, so everyone knows exactly what needs to be done.
Tell me about when you had to deal with conflict within your team. How was the conflict solved? How did you handle that? How would you deal with it now?
We had to work on our capstone during the pandemic, and our classes were online. We still had to try to work on our capstone in person when we could and our class schedules were a bit different, so it was hard to work together more often besides our class time. The conflict was solved by setting up a team meeting and talking about all the issues. We assigned work that we would be able to complete it on our own time. Then discussed things that we would need more than one person to help on. We would send updates on what got done, so everyone knew where we were at. We continued having meetings online to talk about our progress.
Give me an example of a time you had to take a creative and unusual approach to solve coding problem. How did this idea come to your mind? Why do you think it was unusual?
Writing down what is happening in every step. During school, I would use the whiteboard to go through different coding problems. It helped me realize where I made mistakes or what each part did.
Describe a situation in which you worked diligently on a project and it did not produce the desired results. Why didn’t you get the desired results? What did you learn from the experience?
In college I was working on a project using matlab that would be able to know if you answered yes or no with your voice. I had a plan on how I would program each piece for it. After working on it for so long, I realized some things weren’t going to work the way I thought they would, so I had to figure out another way. It didn’t end up working properly. There were still some bugs with my code. I learned that not everything will go smoothly, problems will come along the way and you might have to change your approach. If you get stuck, don’t be afraid to ask for help because someone can show you another approach that you didn’t think of. I always asked my professors and classmates for help and they would give me clues or help me see a way that I had not thought of that would help me get so much closer to solving my problem.
Give an example of an important project goal you reached and how you achieved it
An important project goal that I achieved was the app that I created. I always realized that there wasn’t a place where someone can find all the information a person needs in regards to mental health. I wanted to create something that could help people. I had to learn a lot while creating this app because I didn’t know everything and many different problems came around which I had to do a lot of research on.
Describe a situation in which you experienced difficulty in getting others to accept your ideas?
What was your approach? How did this work? Were you able to successfully persuade someone to see things your way?
A situation in which I experienced difficulty in getting others to accept my ideas was during my capstone project. My teammate was having trouble coming up with a way to keep track of the water levels in a bucket. She was trying to create something more complicated. I had an idea using a ultrasonic sensor and writing code where it would turn off when it got to a certain water level. Since we were working remotely. I explained it over zoom. It didn’t work very well because she was confused. But I made a simple drawing showing how it would be placed to do that which definitely helped.
Tell me about a situation when you were responsible for project planning. Did everything go according to your plan? If not, then why and what kind of counteractions did you have to take?
I had to design the size of the planter and make list of materials for our capstone project. Since we had to do this during the pandemic and it was hard to work in person, so we tried to find ways to save time. Instead of making it the full length that I designed, we made it smaller and the size full size of the lumbar length, so we didn’t have to cut so much lumbar. I explained to my group on the decision and they agreed that it was best to make it 6ft smaller.
We wanted to add information about the actions the farmbot did in the current day so far. We talked to someone from farmbot, but they said that wasn’t possible to do. We had to settle with putting manually the times set that the farmbot would water the plants
Tell me about a situation when you made a mistake at work. What happened exactly and how did you deal with it? What steps did you take to improve the situation?
When I worked at castle park. It would get really busy and you would have to multitask most of the time. The cashier system didn’t have an option to put names on the receipt or didn’t give a guest number to call out when the order was ready. You would just have to remember their order and call it out when it was ready or remember the guest who ordered it. There was one time where I had forgotten about a guest’s order without even realizing it. I had moved on to the next order. I had no idea until an employee was saying that there was a guest who was mad because they had been waiting for the rest of the order for a while. I told my supervisor that I forgot about the rest of their order. After that I made sure to print 2 receipts out, one for me to help me keep track and another for the customer. I would write down a number, tell them their number so they knew when their order was ready.
When I worked at California Baptist University, the help desk would transfer professors/staff to us to help them with issues remotely at times. They transferred the professor over to me so I can fix the issue remotely by taking over their computer. There was a time where I forgot to inform the professor that needed help with their computer that I was about to take control of their computer to help them fix their issue. She didn’t like that she didn’t know that I had control of her computer. I apologized to the professor. I told my supervisor about it, so she knew. After that I made sure to communicate very well and before I touched anyone’s computer, I always made sure to tell them if it’s okay. If I was doing something remotely, I told them exactly what I was going to do before doing anything.
Tell me about a time when you worked with someone who was not completing his or her Share of the work. How did you handle the situation? Did you discuss your concern with your coworker? With your manager? If yes, how did your coworker respond to your concern? What was your manager’s response?
When I worked at castle park, there was an employee who was not completing closing duties and we were all doing more work. I talked to the coworker to make sure everything was okay.
He just wasn’t sure what to do besides the few things he was told to do on his first day, so I made sure that he can talk to me and feel comfortable asking me anything. I helped him out and he would ask me questions whenever he wasn’t sure about something. I decided to use a closing duties sheet and assign everyone closing duties.
I was the leader of my group in my engineering economics class. I talked to my teammate to make sure that everything was okay. We were having class and working remotely, so it was hard to know if something was going on. My teammate said that he was having trouble with his laptop, so it was hard for him at that moment. I gave him a bit more time to get that situation fixed and then 1 decided to assign equal work for everyone which helped because now everyone was responsible for something.
In my electronic lab class there was one student who was not completing his share of the work.
I falked to him to make sure that everything was okay, and he said that he had been working a lot of hours recently and wasn’t sure what to do on the lab reports. I assigned work so everyone was responsible for something on the lab reports.
Describe a situation when you worked effectively under pressure. How did you feel when working under pressure? What was going on, and how did you get through it?
When I worked on a website with a tight deadline. I was able to get through it by writing down everything that I needed to do and taking it one step at a time.
During school when I had different assignments/projects due around the same time. I felt a bit overwhelmed, but what really helped me was write everything I needed to do and then figure out which one will take the least amount of time to finish and then figure out which one is due first. Then I would make myself a schedule for the week on what to work on.
When I worked at Castle Park and it was a very busy day and no one was able to come in. I tried my best to get through the line. The customers could see that I was doing my best. Usually 2 or 3 people work in that department when it’s busy, so it was tough. There’s a Yelp review about it from a customer, they weren’t happy about the line but they did say how hard I was working haha.
Tell me about yourself.
My name is Edgardo Herrera. I graduated from California Baptist University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. During my senior capstone design project, we worked on modifying a garden robot. We needed to make a website, and we didn’t have a software engineer in our team. I really enjoyed coding, so I took the lead on the website. I realized just how much I really enjoyed working on that. I graduated during the pandemic, so I decided to learn as much as I can. I then joined 100Devs which is an agency with a training program. I started freelancing as well, but I’m ready to join your company and looking or a new exciting opportunities. I’m really interest in X (whatever that company does). I’m really interested in the gig economy and want to work for a company that supports that structure.
My name is Edgardo Herrera and I graduated from California Baptist University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. During my time in college I worked a couple of different jobs from customer service to IT and did an internship for ROBOTIS which is a robotics company. I really enjoy coding and solving problems. So at my customer service job, One of the hardest tasks was getting all the closing duties done in time, and it would slow our process down because they were all written down in a whiteboard in the back room, and working in a theme park, you would have to walk all the way back just to see what needs to be done and then go back out there, so that’s when I decided to create an app that assigns closing duties to everyone in the department and they can see what they need to do no matter where they were in the amusement park. Everyone can update their task and can see what else needed to be done as well. I really started leaning more into my coding side and after graduation I joined 100devs which is an agency with a training program where I continued to grow my coding skills. I was able to work with clients and is something that I continue to do now with freelancing. But now I want to join a company that [has a similar mission for helping people.]
