Behaviourist Approach Flashcards
what does the behaviourist approach believe about behaviour?
all behaviour is learned and is only interested in studying behaviour that is observable and measurable
what is the behaviourist approach not concerned about?
mental processes of the mind
what does the behaviourist approach suggest about behaviour across species?
basic learning processes are the same across all species and thus animals can replace humans as experimental subjects
what are the two forms of learning?
- classical conditioning
- operant conditioning
what is classical conditioning?
learning through association
what is the process of classical condiitoning?
- unconditioned stimulus(food) –> unconditioned response(saliva)
- unconditioned stimulus(food) + neutral stimulus(bell) –> unconditioned response(saliva)
- conditioned stimulus(bell) –> conditioned response(saliva)
= the dog learned to associate the sound of the bell with the food so would salivate
what was used to demonstrate the classical conditioning?w
Pavlov’s dog
what is operant conditioning?
learning through behaviour through consequences, reinforcements and punishments
what does reinforcements lead to?
the behaviour being repeated
what is positive reinforcements?
receiving a reward for a desirable behaviour so it is repeated
what is negative reinforcements?
removal of unpleasant stimulus so behaviour is repeated
who proposed the classical conditioning?
Skinner
what is a punishment?
unpleasant consequence for a behaviour which is not desirable
what are the evaluations of the behaviourist approach?
+ research is well-controlled
+ real-world applications
- very deterministic
