Define a phobia
A persistent, intense, and irrational fear of certain situations or objects. The fear is out of proportion to the danger posed, and affects a persons day-to-day life
What are the three types of phobia?
Specific phobia- phobias to specific objects
Social phobias- fear of embarrassment or humiliation in public situations
Agrophobia- persistent fear of certain environments, often due to crowdedness of openness.
Emotional symptoms of phobias
- intense feelings of PANIC that is out of proportion to the situation
- anxiety
Behavioural symptoms of phobias
- Going to great lengths to avoid the phobic object and escape from the object as soon as possible
- screaming when around it
Cognitive symptoms of phobias
- the person showing distorted thinking about phobic situations
- acknowledgment that the fear is irrational.
Define depression (unipolar)
Two main symptoms are that you have depressed mood most or all of the time and a diminished interest in usually pleasurable activities. Person must have experience at least 5 symptoms of depression and for at least two weeks to be diagnosed.
Emotional symptoms of depression
- low mood or helplessness
- irritability and being more angry than normal.
Behavioural symptoms of depression
- lack of energy and being inactive
- sleep problems, insomnia
- changes in appitite, eating a lot of nothing
Cognitive symptoms of depression
- Distorted negative thinking
- thoughts of death
- poor concentration and memory
Bipolar depression
The person has periods of weeks where the experience depression symptoms, but also have phases of mania where the person may show symptoms such as excessive high moods.
Define OCD
An anxiety disorder where the person experiences persistent, intrusive thoughts that they find extremely unpleasant and upsetting obsessions. The thoughts are often about things that the person finds grim. They may also have uncontrollable urges to behave in a certain way.
What are obsessions
Unable to stop thinking about something that may be seen as revolting e.g. Germs
What are compulsions
Where you have an uncontrollable urge to carry out a behaviour e.g. Washing hands
Emotional symptoms of OCD
- Intense anxiety or feeling of panic when intrusive thoughts occur
- the person may feel guilt and disgust when they get thoughts
Behavioural symptoms of OCD
- the time spent on compulsive behaviours can have a serious effect on the person ability to work or their ability to maintain social relationships
- avoidance of things that trigger the obsessions and compulsions
- acting on compulsions
