Behavioural - Budzynski Flashcards
Method used
Experimental method
Ps being trained in a lab
How many participants used
18 ps who replied to an advertisement in a local paper in Colorado
Design
IMD
Randomly allocated to 3 groups
Procedure : weeks?
For 2 weeks patients kept a record of thier headaches
Group A and B were given 16 sessions of training with 2 sessions for 8 weeks
Aim:
To see whether biofeedback if an effective method of reducing tension headaches
Procedure What were group A taught ?
Relaxation and told the clicks of the biofeedback would reflect their muscle tension
Slower clicks - less muscle tension
Procedure What were group B taught ?
Told to concentrate on the varying clicks
Given pseudo feedback
Procedure What were group C taught ?
Given no training but told their training would start in 2 months
What was found?
The muscle tension in A was significantly diff to B
After 3 months groups As tension was lower than B
A reported headaches dropped from their base line and was also significantly less than B and C
Drug usage in A decreased more than B
Conclusions?
Biofeedback is an effective was of training patients to relax and reduce their tension headaches : effective stress management technique
Relaxation training is also more effective than just being monitored but is better when used together with biofeedback
