Behavioural approach to explaining phobias Flashcards
1
Q
Behavioural approach
A
Way of explaining behaviour in terms of what is observable and in terms of learning
2
Q
Classical conditioning
A
Learning by association. Occurs when 2 stimuli are repeatedly paired together- unconditioned stimulus and new neutral stimulus. Neutral stimulus eventually produces same response that was first produced by unlearned stimulus alone.
3
Q
Operant conditioning
A
Form of learning in which behaviour is shaped and maintained by its consequences. Possible consequences include positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement or punishment.
4
Q
Evaluation
A
Good explanatory power
Alternative explanation for avoidance behaviour
Incomplete explanation of phobias
