Behavioural And CBT Theeapy Flashcards
What is imaginal exposure?
A treatment for anxiety disorders that involve imagining the feared stimulus
What is IN VIVO exposure?
Approaching the feared stimulus or being exposed to it in reality
What is the core idea of any therapy calling itself Cognitive?
People’s emotional reactions and behaviour are strongly influenced by cognitions. (Their thoughts, mental images, beliefs and interpretations about themselves or the situations in which they find themselves - fundamentally the meaning they give to the events of their lives)
What are the basic principles of CBT?
Cognitive principle -
Behavioural principle - CBT recognizes behaviour as crucial to changing or maintaining psychological states
Continuum principle- emotions, thoughts and behaviours exist on a continuum, there is no absolute black or white way of experiencing or responding to things but there are ranges.
The here and now principle- CBT focus is more on how to change present behaviours
The interacting systems principle - The view that problems should be thought of as interactions between various systems within the person and their environment ( internal systems = cognition, affect or emotion, behaviour and physiology)
The empirical principle- CBT believes we should use scientific evidence
Interpersonal principle - working alliance with therapist and client
Why are ATs usually tackled early on in CBT therapy?
Because of the immediate effects it has on emotional states
What are a persons core beliefs?
It is their fundamental beliefs about themselves, others, the world in general, or the future. (For example, I am bad or others are not to be trusted.)
Underlying assumptions
The bridging gap between core beliefs and automatic thoughts
Can be thought of as rules for living
Often take form of conditional “if, then propositions”
Eg. if I keep a low profile, then no one will see the real me, and never know that I am unlovable.
What are the three levels of cognition?
Automatic thoughts
Underlying assumptions
Core beliefs
What is depression described by CBT
Negatively biased views of oneself, of the world in general end of the future.
What is anxiety according to CBT
A bias towards the over estimation of threat, and or of the under estimation of ability to cope
CBT is distinguished by a combination of characteristics, which are
Collaborative
Structured and active
Time, limited, and brief
Empirical
Problem-oriented
What is a Socratic method
A teaching method
Stimulates critical thinking and encourages the exploration of thoughts and ideas
CBT formulation can also be referred to as
A Case conceptualization
A CBT formulation uses the CBT model to develop:
A description of the current problems
An account of why, and how these problems might have developed
An analysis of the key maintaining process is hypothesize to keep the problems going
What is decentring?
Taking a step back, the ability to view cognitions as mental events rather than as expressions of reality
