Behaviour of Charged Particles (5.1) Flashcards
What is Net charge
When electrons move from one object to another, both objects are said to have a net charge
What is a coulomb
A coulomb is a the SI unit of charge
What is a coulomb
A coulomb is the SI unit of charge
Proton and electron charge
+ 1.6x10^-19 = proton
- 1.6x10^-19 = electron
Why are metals conductors
Metals are conductors as the valence electrons are only slightly attracted to the nucleus
Loose electrons can move freely within the material and can thus conduct electricity
Why are non metals insulators
Non metals are insulators as the valence electrons are tightly bound to the their respective nucleus and cannot move freely. This why non metals are insulators
What are semi conductors
Materials that have a conductivity value falling in between that of conductors and insulators
Explain why electric circuits often consist of wires that are made from copper and are coated in a protective plastic?
Copper is a good conductor of electricity
Plastic is a good insulator
Plastic coating is used to prevent charge leaving the circuit
