Q

Why are metals conductors

A

Metals are conductors as the valence electrons are only slightly attracted to the nucleus

Loose electrons can move freely within the material and can thus conduct electricity

Q

Why are non metals insulators

A

Non metals are insulators as the valence electrons are tightly bound to the their respective nucleus and cannot move freely. This why non metals are insulators

Q

Explain why electric circuits often consist of wires that are made from copper and are coated in a protective plastic?

A

Copper is a good conductor of electricity

Plastic is a good insulator

Plastic coating is used to prevent charge leaving the circuit
