Give an example of when behaviour may mean different things
Shivering could mean excitement or cold
What is a stereotypy?
A repeated, relatively invariant sequence of movements that has no obvious function

What is qualitative behaviour assessment?
Assessing the emotion in animals to assess the welfare
Looks at expressions that reflect the animals emotional experiences
What is the issue with using play as an indication of welfare?
Not prevalent in adults in many species
What are the problems with choice tests?
May be offering the wrong options
Choice depends if circumstance and previous history
Does the animal choose what is best for itself?
Why is determining personality in dogs important?
Determine suitability/success for work or performance e.g. police dogs, service dogs
What are active vipers?
Deal with an aversive situation by trying to escape or remove aversive stimulus
What are passive copers?
Respond to aversive situations with no obvious outward signs
