What is included when assessing a patient’s appearance and behavior?
This assessment should include Posture, mannerisms, whether they make and maintain eye contact, clothing, cleanliness, use of facial expressions and any identifying marks such as tattoos or scars.
What may slouched posture indicate?
This may suggest depression or low energy levels
What may tapping and fidgeting mannerisms indicate?
Anxiety and/or agitation
What may the avoidance of eye contact indicate?
A sign of shyness or social anxiety
Why is it important to make note of any distinguishing features during the MSE?
To ensure their safety if awol occurs and or to provide insight into their interests or experiences
How could you write about this behavior in a note: Poor posture?
Patient A presents with slumped shoulders and a bowed head while sitting in communal areas.
How could you write about this behavior in a note: Good eye contact?
Patient C maintains strong eye contact during conversations, indicating engagement and attentiveness.
How could you write about this behavior in a note: Visible self-harm?
Patient F has visible self-harm scars on their arms.
