Behavioral Therapy Flashcards
Focuses on…
- observable behaviors
- learning that promotes change
- assessment/evaulation
Four Areas of Development
- Classical Conditioning
- Operant Conditioning
- Social Learning Approach
- Cognitive Behavior Therapy
- Classical Conditioning
In classical conditioning certain respondent behaviors, such as knee jerks and salivation, are elicited from a passive organism
Example: Pavlov’s dogs and the bell
- Operant Conditioning
Behaviors are influenced by the consequences that follow them
- Social Learning Approach
(learning from your environment)
Example: A child watches an older sibling tie his shoe and then learns to do it herself.
- Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Emphasizes cognitive processes such as a client’s self-talk, beliefs, values as mediators of behavior change
-what people believe influences how they act and feel
Key Characteristics
- help people change maladaptive behaviors
- deal with clients current issues and factors that influence them
Goals
clear/concrete objective terms
both short and long term- specific
clients actively participate in creating goals
realistic and measurable
Clients are encouraged to…
provide feedback through session
participate in role plays
Operant Conditioning Techniques
Positive reinforcement
Negative reinforcement
Extinction
Positive punishment - The addition of a noxious or aversive stimulus that leads to a decrease in a specific behavior
Negative punishment - The removal of a pleasant stimulus that leads to a decrease in a specific behavior
Reinforcement INCREASES response
Punishment DECREASES response
Extinction
ceasing of a behavior because it is not reinforced
