Behavioral Sciences Flashcards
What are the three types of neurons in the nervous system?
- Motor (efferent)
- Interneurons
- Sensory (afferent)
What does the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system focus on?
“Rest-and-digest”
What are some of the characteristic traits of the parasympathetic branch?
- Constricts pupils
- Stimulates flow of saliva
- Constricts bronchi
- Slows heart rate
- Stimulates peristalsis and secretion
- Stimulates bile release
- Contracts bladder
What is the sympathetic branch focused on?
“Flight-or-fight” responses
What are some of the characteristic traits of the sympathetic branch?
Dilates pupils Inhibits salivation Relaxes bronchi Accelerates heartbeat Piloerection or sweating Inhibits peristalsis and secretion Stimulates glucose production and release Secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline Inhibits bladder contraction Stimulates orgasm
What does the hindbrain contain?
Contains the cerebellum, medulla oblongata, and reticular formation
What does the midbrain contain?
Contains the inferior and superior colliculi
What does the forebrain contain?
Contains the thalamus, hypothalamus, basal ganglia, limbic system, and cerebral cortex
What does the thalamus do? What part of the brain is it located in?
Located in the forebrain.
Relay station for sensory information
What does the hypothalamus do? What part of the brain is it located in?
Located in the forebrain.
Maintains homeostasis and integrates with he endocrine system through the hypophyseal portal system that connects it to the anterior pituitary
What does the basal ganglia do? What part of the brain is it located in?
Located in the forebrain.
Smoothens movements and helps maintain postural stability
What do the limbic system do? What part of the brain is it located in?
Located in the forebrain.
Controls emotion and memory. Includes septal nuclei (pleasure-seeking), amygdala (fear and aggression), hippocampus (memory), and fornix (communication within limbic system)
What are the septal nuclei associated with?
Pleasure-seeking
What is the amygdala associated with?
Fear and aggression
What is the hippocampus associated with?
Memory
