Behavior Modification CH1 Flashcards
This term is often used interchangeably with the term behavior modification. It involves analyzing and modifying human behavior.
Applied Behavior Analysis
The subject matter of behavior modification. It’s what a person says or does that makes up their actions.
Behavior
The philosophy that makes up the science of behavior. It states that behavior is lawful and controlled by environmental events that act as stimuli in relation to behavior.
What is behaviorism
A target behavior, usually undesirable, that one seeks to decrease in frequency, duration, or intensity. Behavior we seek to diminish.
What is a behavioral excess?
The field of psychology concerned with analyzing and modifying human behavior. Also called ABA.
What is behavior modification?
A target behavior, usually desirable, that we’d like to increase the frequency, duration, or intensity off. Something we want to see more of.
What is a behavioral deficit?
The antecedents and consequences that bookend behavior and influence the probability of particular behaviors.
What is a controlling variable?
These are the private events we experience. It’s behavior that is not observable to others.
What are covert behaviors?
The aspects of behavior that can be measured and modified. Such as frequency, duration, intensity, and latency.
What is a dimension— in relation to behavior?
The dimension of behavior that specifies the time of onset to the time of offset for a behavior. It’s how long an instance of a behavior lasts.
What is duration?—in relation to behavior
The scientific study of behavior and the stimuli that are related to the occurrence of behavior. Involves laboratory work in humans and nonhumans.
What is the experimental analysis of behavior?
The dimension of behavior that specifies the number of times a behavior occurs over a certain time period. # of occurrence divided by time equals the rate of the behavior.
What is frequency?—in relation to behavior.
The dimension of behavior that specifies the force or magnitude of the behavior. Usually measured on a rating scale or recording instrument.
What is intensity?— in relation to behavior.
The dimension of behavior that specifies the lag in time from when a stimulus in the environment leads to the onset of a behavior.
What is latency?— in relation to behavior.
The concept that behaviors that produce favorable outcomes on the environment are more likely to be repeated.
What is the law of effect?
