Beginner Certification Flashcards
Three basic types of motorcycles
street, dual-sport, off-highway
Street motorcycle purpose
designed for use on public roads
Dual-sport purpose
can be used on the street or on off-highway trails
Off-highway purpose
not street legal
Primary controls
handlebars, throttle, clutch lever, gearshift lever, front brake lever, rear brake pedal
Other controls
fuel supply valve, ignition switch, choke control, engine cut-off switch, turn signal switch
Handlebars
used to control direction of the motorcycle
Throttle
right hand grip, rotates to control engine speed. toward you = increase speed, away from you = decrease speed
Clutch lever
in front of left hand grip. connects power from engine to rear wheel
Gearshift lever
left side of the motorcycle in front of the footrest, operated with left foot
Front brake lever
in front of right grip and operated by using the fingers of the right hand; strong, doesn’t require much pressure
Rear brake pedal
in front of right footrest and operated with right foot
Fuel supply valve
usually under fuel tank, controls flow of gasoline to the engine
Positions of fuel supply valve
on, reserve, prime, off
Reserve position
allows access to a small amount of fuel after main supply has been depleted
Prime position
permits direct fuel flow, valve should NOT be left on after use
Ignition switch
often located on instrument cluster. Positions include on, off, lock/park
Lock/park position
engage steering lock and allow key to be removed
Choke control
located on handlebars or near engine. Provides enriched fuel mix to start a cold engine. Also raises idle to permit the engine to warm quickly. Should be turned off as soon as unneeded. Fuel-injected motorcycles do not have a choke control
Engine cut-off switch
near the right hand grip and operated with the thumb. Allows you to shut the engine off without removing your hand from the hand grip
Turn signal switch
usually located near left hand grip and operated with thumb.
