Why is the piece called Pathetique?

A

Two very contrasting tempos with different time signatures.
Sudden changes in dynamic.
Wide ranging fast scale passages feel out of control.
Sudden accents (sfz).
Diminished 7ths chords create tension.
Tremolo octaved in LH, low, murky sense of movement/ unsettled.
Pedal not frequently used - tension.

A

This key is associated with tragedy.

A

Similar to modern day piano with sustain and soft pedals and a large 6.5 octave range.
