What are the 4 ingredients of beer?
Malt/barley - sweetness and colour
Hopps - bitterness and aroma
Water - beer is 90% water
Yeast - ale and lager yeast, determines style of beer and concerts fermented sugar into alcohol
What is a lager
Taste light and malty, easiest beer to drink
What is an IPA
Main flavour from hops and herbal, citrus or fruity flavours.
Wide range, can be citrusy, or strong and bitter
What is a pale ale
Pale ales are usually hoppy, with lower ABV than IPA’s.
They are malty, medium bodies and easy to drink.
What is a Pilsner
These are lagers, but typically more bitter than lagers
What is a stout beer
A dark beer,
Sweet, fully bodied, slightly roasty ale and suggest coffee and cream, or sweetened espresso.
Sweetness typically offsets bitterness
What is a porter
Very similar to stouts but with more of a chocolate taste
What is a wheat beer
They’re light like lagers but the main ingredient (malt) is wheat.
What is a sour beer
Very tart, sweet and sour flavour
What are the 2 major categories of beer
1) Ales - wide range of flavour and colour, more intense/distinct flavours
2) Lagers - light, crisp and refreshing
What are the 7 types of beers
Lager - crisp, clean, low hopps
Pilsner - hoppier lager
Wheat beer - “blondes”, light and citrusy
Amber - aka “red”, amber in colour, sweetness from caramelization, more Malty.
Pale ale - very diverse in colour and taste
India pale ale - hoppy/bitter, commonly citrusy, more complex tastes
Stout - dark in colour from roasting the barley
