Becteria Structure & Functions Flashcards
Cytoplasm
the fluid inside the cell
Cytosol
liquid portion of the cytoplasm
Cytoskeleton
provide support to the structure of the cell
Nucleoid
the region in the cell contains DNA information, also gives the genetic information to make
Glycocalyx
Gelatinous, Sticky substance around and outside of the cell surface
Cell wall
provide structure and support
flagellum
for movement
Fimbriae, Pili
Fimbriae are sticky Bristle like projections. they stick with another environment.
Pili is the same thing and it helps in bacterial Conjugation (transfer genetic info)
Inclusions
may include extra reserve deposits of chemicals
Cell walls - Peptidoglycan
provide structure and shape.
protect from osmosis
help resist antibiotics
peptidoglycan has two layers 1 Gram-Positive 2. Gram Negative
gram-negative and gram Positive Differences
G. Pos.- Thick cell walls. contain Teichoic acid and Lipoteichoic acids.
look Purple after staining
G. Neg.- thin layer of peptidoglycan
- Bilayer contain membrane outside the peptidoglycan phospholipid proteins - Contain Lipopolysaccharide. - look pink after staining
Endospores
- Unique structure produced by some bacteria
- Vegetative cells (normal growing) transform into endospores when nutrients are limited.
- they resist to the extreme condition such as heat, radiation, chemicals
Biofilms
Group of bacteria growing together. thick slimy layer on teeth.
