Beauvoir Flashcards
Why does Beauvoir think that when we devote ourselves to someone we tyrannize them?
We can’t accurately understand someone else’s values because values change over time. By imposing our own idea of their values onto them, we restrict their growth. It’s like a controlling parent who pushes their child into a specific career path without considering the child’s true ambitions.
What does Beauvoir mean by saying “[t]he error of Kantian ethics is to have claimed to
make an abstraction of our own presence in the world”?
ant says we should act according to reason’s demands, but Beauvoir believes freedom has no limits; we can interpret it however we like, without being bound by reason. Kant’s idea of reason is too theoretical; Beauvoir prefers freedom without limits.
