Beatrice Flashcards
Beatrice
Argumentative
What does this show about her relationship with Benedick?
“What my Lady Disdain! Are you yet living?”
Based on their quick-witted arguments.
Beatrice
Bold
Who does this contrast with?
“I wonder that you will still be talking, Signor/ Benedick; nobody marks you”
Contrasts with Hero who is well-behaved and quiet. Beatrice speaks her mind.
Beatrice
Outspoken
How does this contrast with normal women in the Elizabethan era?
“By my troth, niece, thou wilt never get thee a/ husband, if thou be so shrewd of thy tongue.”
Women were expected to be discreet, so by being outspoken and sharp in the way she speaks, she doesn’t fit the expectations of women. She may not be able to become married with characteristics like that.
Beatrice
Frustration
Who does she want to take revenge against?
“O God, that I were a man! I would eat his heart/ in the market-place.”
Claudio for accusing Hero of cheating on him.
In the Shakespearean era men would play the role of women as it would be deemed as inappropriate for women on the stage- gives irony.
