Beatitudes Flashcards
Where can you find the beatitudes?
The Gospel of Matthew (5:1-11)
(Jesus’ sermon on the mount)
What are the Beatitudes?
Teachings by Jesus; 8 key lessons to remember when trying to lead a Christian life
What is the difference between the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes?
- Ten Commandments given to Moses
- Jesus’s message was different (more do’s than don’ts)
- Love = motivation (for Christians)
- They teach us how to live as Jesus’ disciples today
The 10 Commandments are summary of what?
Law/ things we shan’t do.
Rather than things we can do to lead a Christian life (Beatitudes)
List two Corporal Works of Mercy (and 2 examples of how to act on those)
- Feed the hungry
-> donate food/give charitably (sask food bank/volunteer) - Visit the imprisoned
-> visit those and take care of those with disabilities (best buddies/letters and cards to those ‘stuck’ in life)
List two Spiritual Works of Mercy (and 2 examples how to act on these)
- Bear wrongs patiently
-> don’t cancel people left and right (God is the ultimate judge, jury, and executioner) - Comfort the sorrowful
-> help those struggling with loss (lend an ear/give a hug/spare your time)
Why do we believe Mary is pure?
- Immaculately conceived
- Exempt from sin & never did in her life (did no wrong)
Define meek
“enduring injury with patience and without resentment”/ humility is strength / strength contained
How can one be meek?
- Don’t oppose God
- Be faithful to Him
- Enduring without violent retaliation shows respect for the dignity of all
- Be Spiritually strong 💪
How can mourning be a blessing?
Mourning makes us want to IMPROVE OURSELVES and DO BETTER. We learn EMPATHY. We don’t mourn without HOPE
When can mourning be a blessing?
1) we recognize the world is both dignified and broken
2) we see ourselves as we really are, & we are called to Repentance and Change
3) we see God who is suffered great loss and wants to Bear our suffering and pain
4) we aren’t alone or without hope
Who was Saint Faustina?
Canonized Saint; Apostle of Mercy
- “secretary” of divine mercy (devotion)
- wrote ‘Divine mecry in my soul’
What did Saint John Paul II teach us about Mercy?
” THERE IS NOTHING THAT MAN NEEDS MORE THAN DIVINE MERCY, that love which is benevolent, which is compassionate, which raises man above his weakness to the infinite Heights of the Holiness of God”
Why do you think Mercy was so important to St. John Paul II?
He believed that Mercy was a gift from God that could lead to ULTIMATE PEACE AND JOY
List one beatitude & explain what it means [pt.1]
” Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied”
A righteous person has a social conscience and will to work to help society become more Truthful, Merciful, Just, and Compassionate. God will decide the ultimate justice at the end. He is the only true judge.
Give an example of a specific person living that beatitude and how you can live it in your life today [pt.2]
Paul Rusesabagina 🇷🇼 –> Rwandan human rights activist. Previously the manager of the Hôtel Des Mille Collins in Kigali during the Rwandan genocide. Which housed both Hutu and Tutsi refugees fleeing the interhamwe militia. (Watch Hotel Rwanda) every single one of them survived.
How to live it?
-> be present
-> be understanding (if not, learn)
-> stand up for what’s right
-> take action (even small ones count)
-> respect & dignity
Five steps to social action?
1) Be PRESENT
2) Develop an UNDERSTANDING
3) (WWJD) What would Jesus DO?
4) THINK & ACT creatively
5) Act TOGETHER
How are you called to personal responsibility today? Do we have one to the environment? Is this connected to the Beatitudes?
The Beatitudes are a pursuit of goodness, not just the avoidance of evil
We have a personal responsibility as Christians to treat all people and our environment with dignity & to search to end Injustice.
Best solution to end most problems -> basic summary of all the Beatitudes
Give some examples where you are called
- At home
- In our community
- Everywhere we go
3 ways to live them
-> don’t cancel ppl/ stay away from proudness/ be prudent
-> forgive. FORGIVE. FORGIVE!!!
-> TAKE ACTION. Don’t be a bystander
The Beatitudes are about finding joy. What is the difference between joy and happiness?
Joy: a deeper, more enduring state of inner peace and contentment that comes from a deep connection with God based on Christ and his promises, admist hardship (state of blessedness)
Happiness: fleeting, positive emotion dependent on external circumstances
