Bearings & Lubrication Flashcards
State the three general purposes of bearings?
Support loads, reduce friction, maintain alignment
List the two broad categories of bearings?
Plain bearings, anti-friction bearings
Describe plain bearings?
No metal to metal wear while running. Plain bearings work by a sliding action. The shaft is supported by a thin film of lubricant. Heavier loads and lower speeds.
What are anti-friction bearings?
Anti-friction bearings consist of balls or rollers interposed between two surfaces having relative motion. They support lighter loads at higher speeds.
What are the functions of lubricants specific to bearings?
- Minimizes friction at points of contact with in the bearing.
- Reduces wire.
- Protects the bearing surfaces against corrosion.
- Carries away heat generated within the bearing.
- Dampens or absorbs shock loads.
- Forms a seal to prevent the entry of foreign material into the bearing.
What is a reference that provides guidelines for the proper lubrication of all equipment in the plant?
Station lubrication manual
What is the station lubrication manual?
It is a reference that provides guidelines for the proper lubrication of all equipment in the plant.
List five indications of improper bearing lubrication?
- High bearing temperatures.
- Noise and excessive vibration.
- Bearing wear.
- Foreign material in the oil, metal chips and debris.
- sight glass that shows a higher or lower oil level than expected.
What are two specific guidelines listed under lubrication guidelines?
Proper lubrication and good housekeeping
What are five personal safety guidelines you should always remember when working with lubricants?
- Most Lubricants are petroleum based and usually flammable.
- Always work with adequate ventilation.
- Ensure the area is free from spark causing or high heat generating equipment.
- Store flammable solvents and lubricants in approved areas.
- Wear personal protective equipment.
Where are they correct methods and locations for disposing of lubricants outline?
Nuclear site directive
The force acting in a 90° angle (perpendicular) to the shaft?
Radial loads
They force acting parallel to the shaft and along the axis of the shaft?
Axial loads or thrust.
Any substance that is used to reduce friction between objects in relative motion.
Lubricant.
Friction reducing mechanical devices that support another machine part, and allow controlled relative motion between mechanical members.
Bearings.
