Beaches Redone Flashcards
What are the features (5)
Ripples
Runnels
Ridges
Offshore bars
Cusps
What are ripples (2)
As waves retreat = create patterns in sand
Only visible at low tide and sandy beaches
What runnels and ridges (5+)
As a tide ebbs
It encounters natural raised areas of land = waves slow down
Waves deposit sand
Build up in height = ridges
Any water left from outgoing tide which is trapped = runnels = natural ditches of water
What are cusps (5)
Form in bays
As tide comes in bay = wave energy is refracted
The bending of waves causes energy to be spread
As swash comes in = divided left and right and meet with another swash
Two swashes coming together = stronger backwas = gouges + semi circular shape forms
Main features of cusp (2)
Eroded area = embayment = tiny little bays within the beach
Horn = where swash is forced to divide
What are offshore bars (3)
Deposits of sand of the shore
Winter = beaCh erodes and deposits offshore
Not visible at low tide
