The visual organization of an artwork
Design or Composition
Shapes/Forms that are precise, mathematical, or machine made
Geometric
This is the main area in a composition that attracts the viewer’s eye
Focal Point
When different elements of an artwork/design come together to create a sense of wholeness
Unity
The use of many different elements in a composition to create visual interest and avoid monotony
Variety
The relative size of something, measured against the standard size of other elements
Proportions or Scale
Colors that remind us of cold
Cool
The color scheme involves the use of one color and its tints, tones, and shades
Monochromatic
The range of lights and darks in a composition
Values
The movement of the eye around a composition based on the repetitious sequence of certain elements, similar to movement in music
Rhythm
This results when you add black to a color
Shade
The resulting path of a moving point or a dot that went for a walk
Line
The appearance over and over again of a particular element in a composition
Repetition
These colors are made by mixing equal parts of the primary color
Secondary
This is a visually perceived area created by either an enclosing line, or a change in value, color, or texture that defines an area
Shape
This defines the outline of a form, as well as the interior structure, without the use of shading
Contour Line
The distribution of visual weight in a composition
Balance
Refers to the relationship of difference between areas of light and dark
Contrast
The pure pigment of a color without tint or shade
Hue
These colors are a combination of a primary and a secondary
Tertiary
The lightness or darkness of a color
Value/Luminance
The subjective use of a color by the artist that has no basis in the realistic appearance of the object depicted
Arbitrary
The intensity of a color
Saturation
Colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel
Analogous
The natural color of an object, unmodified by adding unrealistic light or shadows or any other distortion
Local Color
These colors remind us of heat
Warm
Shapes that are fluid and irregular, that remind one of forms found in nature
Organic
These are the basic colors
Primary
When you add white to a color
Tint
These colors are opposite each other on the color wheel
Complimentary
Name 3 “zones” that are used in a composition to show depth
Foreground, Middleground, and Background
